After Starfield's Ending, Future Releases Are at a Crossroads

Highlights

  • Starfield’s unconventional ending makes it memorable
  • New Game+ offers the chance to explore different outcomes
  • Bethesda must balance innovation with repetition in future releases

As a long-time gamer and a fan of Bethesda’s open-world RPGs, I was both excited and apprehensive about Starfield due to its unconventional ending and the pressure it carries as one of Bethesda’s first major releases under Microsoft.

Spoilers for Starfield are ahead.

Starfield is a space game by Bethesda that has players searching the cosmos for strange artifacts that seem to hold many secrets. It’s a game that has players questioning science and spirituality, and it features plenty of exploration and action-packed combat sequences. It also has an interesting ending that encourages players to jump into New Game+.

The unconventional finale of Starfield, by Starfield‘s makers Bethesda, leaves a lasting impression. But using this surprise technique repeatedly could make it anticipatable in future editions. Thus, Bethesda must find innovative methods to maintain the novelty of upcoming Starfield installments without relying on familiar strategies.

Starfield’s Weird Ending Explained

In a thought-provoking twist, Starfield‘s narrative challenges conventional wisdom and invites players to ponder the intricacies of existence. The journey commences when the protagonist stumbles upon an enigmatic relic at the game’s outset. After coming into contact with this artifact, the player’s character experiences a profound cosmic vision, prompting the exploration team, Constellation, to embark on a quest for additional discoveries.

During the quest for the relics, players may encounter the Hunter and the Emissary, two figures with conflicting beliefs. The Hunter values strength above all else and argues that the one who can collect all the artifacts deserves the Unity’s power, regardless of identity. However, the Emissary asserts that the Unity must be protected by a Starborn. Ultimately, it is the player’s choice to align with either side.

No matter which character the gamer selects to join them, the game concludes with the player entering the Unity and transforming into a Starborn. This transition signifies their departure from their current universe and the initiation of a new storyline in an alternate universe. It’s important to note that this parallel universe isn’t an exact replica of the original one, as subtle variations emerge each time the player initiates Starfield‘s New Game+.

Do Things Differently in Starfield’s New Game+

In New Game+, players are given the freedom to explore alternative decisions and uncover fresh results. A noteworthy advantage of this mode is the opportunity to save every member of Constellation when The Eye is under attack by the Starborn. Regrettably, this feat cannot be achieved during the initial playthrough; instead, gamers must make a heartrending choice between sacrificing someone at The Eye or protecting The Lodge.

Through initiating New Game+, gamers have the opportunity to acquire beneficial items like the Starborn Guardian spacecraft and the renowned Starborn Spacesuit Astra. The spacesuit is particularly desirable due to its exceptional defense capabilities.

Future Starfield Releases Must Perform a Balancing Act

As a devoted gamer, I’ve got to say that Starfield surprised me with its captivating finale. It presented me with an intriguing motivation to delve back into New Game+, which is quite the achievement. This new standard sets the stage high for future Starfield installments, leaving us eagerly anticipating more groundbreaking endings from Bethesda. But let’s remember, innovation should not come at the cost of monotony. Bethesda needs to tread carefully and avoid rehashing the same formula repeatedly, or else the allure may fade swiftly.

After the intriguing journey through the multiverse in Starfield, a typical conclusion might not suffice. This leaves future installments facing a critical juncture, requiring deft handling to prevent fan dissatisfaction. One potential solution for Starfield is to shift focus from the ending and instead expand upon the game’s origins. For instance, downloadable content could incorporate various player decisions made in the original game, offering unique introductions.

Starfield Will Receive DLC Soon

As a curious gamer eagerly anticipating Bethesda’s upcoming “Starfield” DLC, I’m excited to share that I’ll get a sneak peek into how they approach franchise endings with Shattered Space. Based on the intriguing reveal trailer, this expansion seems to zero in on the House Va’ruun and promises some intense horror elements. However, it remains unclear if my decisions made in the main game will impact the DLC’s storyline.

Bethesda’s acquisition by Microsoft marked the release of “Starfield” as one of their major projects post-deal. It also marks the studio’s first new intellectual property in a quarter century. Thankfully, this sci-fi title has resonated with audiences, indicating potential expansion of the Settled Systems universe.
