Agent Locke: Halo’s Elusive Hero Deserves a Second Chance

In the year 2529, on the distant UNSC colony of Jericho VII, a man named Jameson Locke will be born who is famously recognized as Agent Locke from the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) by many Halo fans. Since 2014, this character has been a debated and enigmatic figure in the Halo series despite only appearing in two games. Though he was intended to serve as a new leading protagonist like Master Chief and Arbiter, his future is uncertain following the mixed response to his first playable appearance in Halo 5: Guardians. As Jameson Locke approaches his 504th birthday this year, let’s delve into Agent Locke’s life, influence, and potential role in the Halo universe going forward.

The Life and ONI Career of Jameson Locke

In the era of unparalleled turmoil and disorder among Earth’s colonies, Locke found himself born just four years after the conflict against a powerful multi-alien-species entity known as the Covenant had erupted. This entity, driven by a religious hegemony, glassed numerous worlds, leading to the seemingly endless death of billions. The Covenant’s objective was the elimination of humanity, deemed heretics in their eyes. At the tender age of six, Locke would bear firsthand witness to the brutal fury of the Covenant when they glassed Jericho VII in 2535. Tragically, he was the sole survivor among his family and was subsequently placed in an off-world orphanage.

In his earlier days, Locke functioned as a freelance hunter and killer, which eventually brought him to the notice of ONI. Impressed by his abilities, they invited him to join their ranks and refine his field operations skills. Locke agreed, and by the end of the 2552 war, he had risen through the ranks to become one of ONI’s deadliest non-augmented agents. Later, as a Lt. Commander, Locke prepared a hit list that included Thel ‘Vadamee, the Supreme Commander of Fleet of Particular Justice. However, this plan was halted when the Covenant Separatists, led by the newly appointed Arbiter Thel ‘Vadam, chose to ally with the UNSC and put an end to the Covenant War post the Great Schism.

Locke’s Live-Action Debut in Halo: Nightfall

Agent Locke first spoke and appeared helmetless in the digital series Halo: Nightfall, played by Mike Colter. Set in 2556, Nightfall first follows Locke and his ONI team deployed to the UNSC colony Sedra to investigate reported terrorist activity. There, they encounter a suicidal Sangheili bioterrorist who deploys the weapon, infecting dozens of people in Sedra City. After interrogating a Covenant Fringe Yonhet who supplied the Sangheili materials for the attack, Locke and his team, now including former Spartan-II Colonel Randall Aiken, tracked the bioweapon’s origins to a fragment of Alpha Halo left adrift after Master Chief destroyed it in 2552. Only Locke and Private Talitha Macer survived the excursion, with Aiken staying behind to denote a nuke, destroying the Halo ring fragment.

As a devoted fan, I’d like to share that it wasn’t just Agent Locke who hailed from Jericho VII; I myself, Noble Six, was also born on that planet in 2530, prior to being drafted into the Spartan-III program’s Beta Company.

The Spartan-IV Career and Disappearance of Jameson Locke

After the flight of Alpha Halo’s piece, Locke joined the Spartan-IV program in 2556 and engaged in numerous conflicts against Insurgents, Jiralhanae, and Kig-Yar forces during operations like MAD HATTER, EASTERN AZURE, and DAWN ECLIPSE. Due to his impressive and distinguished career as an ONI agent and Spartan-IV, Locke was appointed as the leader of Fireteam Osiris, which included Olympia Vale, Edward Buck, and Holly Tanaka. The prowess of Osiris caught the attention of UNSC Infinity’s Captain Lasky, who tasked them with rescuing Dr. Catherine Halsey from the grip of Covenant remnant leader Jul ‘Mdama on the Forerunner planet of Kamchatka in 2558. Here, Locke himself eliminated ‘Mdama, effectively dismantling his Covenant faction.

Not long after that, I found myself on a mission to track down the Spartan-II Blue Team, who had gone off the grid in search of Cortana – an AI who somehow managed to survive her demise aboard the Mantle’s Approach, the Forerunner Didact’s ship, in 2557. This assignment led me to the glassed human colony of Meridian where Locke had defeated the Forerunner ancilla Warden Eternal, clashed with Master Chief, and miraculously survived the catastrophic activation of a colossal Forerunner Guardian. In pursuit of Blue Team, I journeyed to Sanghelios and assisted Arbiter in his triumph over the remnants of Mdama’s Covenant forces, securing a ride on a Guardian to the Forerunner shield world Genesis.

Locke’s Conflicts Against The Created and The Banished

In this scenario, using Genesis’s surveillance device, Exuberant 031, Osiris aided Blue Team in liberating them from Cortana’s control, yet couldn’t prevent her from releasing Guardians throughout the galaxy. With a shared objective to defeat Cortana, Blue Team and Fireteam Osiris escaped Genesis and made their way back to Sanghelios to meet up with the ship Infinity as shown in the novel “Halo: Bad Blood”. Locke approved Buck to rejoin and head his former ODST-turned-Spartan-IV unit, Alpha-Nine. Following the Created’s attack on Cassidy III, Buck married ONI operative Veronica Dare onboard the Infinity.

In 2559, Locke was chosen to lead the operation aimed at eliminating Cortana if Master Chief was indisposed. However, instead of this mission, he was assigned Operation: BREAKER TRIP. The specifics of that operation and Locke’s current status following “Halo Infinite” remain undisclosed.

In the game Halo Infinite, it is noticeable that the Hand of Atriox member Hyperius adorns his shoulders with Agent Locke’s Mjolnir GEN2 Hunter helmet and chestplate, which are typically worn on the head and torso.

Or, more concisely:
In Halo Infinite, Hyperius from the Hand of Atriox wears Agent Locke’s Mjolnir GEN2 Hunter helmet and chestplate as shoulder decorations instead of their usual positions.

Agent Locke’s Impact and Potential Role in Halo Games

Initially, when character Agent Locke was unveiled alongside the Arbiter in the trailer for Halo: The Master Chief Collection in 2014, there was a great deal of curiosity among fans about this Spartan investigating and pursuing Master Chief. However, upon the release of Halo 5: Guardians in 2015, many players voiced their dissatisfaction over the absence of stealth, espionage, and significant conflicts between the Spartans as advertised in the game’s marketing. Additionally, it was revealed that Osiris led 12 out of the 15 missions in Guardians, leading some to speculate that 343 Industries might be preparing to phase out or replace Master Chief in future mainline Halo games. Furthermore, the lack of a clear backstory for Osiris within the game left many players perplexed about Locke’s character and his place alongside Master Chief in the Halo universe.

In the gaming world, some players found Locke’s introduction in Halo 5: Guardians challenging if they only play Halo games. Yet, this character, who transitioned from ONI agent to Spartan-IV, still holds significant potential for future appearances, including leading new games, spin-offs, and additional content. Since 2021, Locke has been absent, but there’s a possibility he could resurface in a Waypoint Chronicle story to celebrate Guardians’ 10th anniversary in October 2025. Moreover, Locke might show up in Halo 7 to assist Master Chief in combating the Banished or feature in a spin-off game focusing on his encounters with Hyperius or wrapping up his battle against the Created. Characters like Buck and Vale have had their stories continued post-Guardians, and Locke deserves a chance for a comeback in another Halo game or at least a dedicated book to fully develop his character arc.
