However, much like Red XIII’s expanded part in Rebirth compared to Remake, it seems Vincent might also be in for a bigger spotlight. After all, he was popular enough in the early 2000s to star in one of the best games in the Final Fantasy 7 universe. So, I’m confident that he’ll be a significant member of the party in the third game. His tragic backstory and potential for some of the coolest moves in the series make him a character I’m eager to see more of!

9. Red XIII

The World’s Oldest Teenager

In the Remake series, Red XIII debuted towards the end of the initial game; however, his role expands significantly in Rebirth. This character stands out due to his unique nature – though physically 48 years old, he is mentally much younger because his species ages exceptionally slowly. In the early stages of the game, Red XIII tries to present himself as more mature than he actually is. However, after the incidents at Cosmo Canyon, he becomes less hesitant to reveal his true personality. We won’t delve into those events here, but Red XIII’s past is one of the aspects that make him one of Final Fantasy’s most compelling non-human characters.

In the game, Red XIII is a multifaceted character, with his gameplay focusing on carefully managing attacks and defense to maximize his Vengeance Mode. Known for his swiftness, he employs quick claw and tooth attacks, which are further enhanced by his headgear. The original Final Fantasy 7 was an exceptional game, but its depiction of Barret, the sole black character, left much to be desired at best and undeniably fell short by today’s standards. Both the remake and the reboot have endeavored to give Barret a more complex personality and portray him as a fully-fledged character rather than a stereotype.

In the storyline, Barret serves as a paternal figure for both Marlene, his adopted daughter, and the entire group. Originally, he was the head of AVALANCHE, but in this version, he leads an AVALANCHE cell that has tense relations with the main organization. The remake also introduces new elements to Barret’s past and the events that unfold when he meets Dyne once more. In battle, his modified arm equipped with a machine gun allows him to eliminate enemies from afar, and he offers an array of impressive gun-arm abilities to utilize.

7. Sephiroth

It turns out that Cait Sith is merely a mechanical puppet operated by Shinra employee Reeve, a detail that has been expanded upon in creative ways in the game “Rebirth.” The character, once seen as a traitor, has become one of the most endearing figures within the game. His redemption arc is skillfully executed. In contrast to his underwhelming presence in the original game, Cait Sith in “Rebirth” is enjoyable to command and his luck-based abilities can bolster party members’ stats while dealing damage effectively.

Initially, Zack Fair made a brief appearance in the original Final Fantasy 7, later starring in his own engaging spin-off prequel. In regards to his role in Rebirth , we’ll simply mention that he’s momentarily playable, and his inclusion in the game is sure to delight fans. Zack was a rising star within SOLDIER when Cloud was still a lowly grunt; in many aspects, he embodied the heroic ideal that young Cloud aspired to achieve.

In the storyline of Final Fantasy 7, it was actually Zack who brandished Cloud’s legendary Buster Sword, not the other way around, and he was the one to save Cloud from Shinra Mansion. Despite his tragic demise prior to the main events, the alternate timeline in the remake has given us an intriguing twist. Similar to Cloud, Zack is skilled in both magical and close-quarters combat, but his fighting style sets him apart slightly. With his optimistic spirit, witty humor, and undeniable allure, Zack has been a beloved character among fans for years and initially held Aerith’s heart.

4. Aerith Gainsborough

Last Of The Cetra And The Girl Everyone Is After

Initially, Aerith appears in both the original version and the remake, portrayed as a gentle florist residing in the impoverished Sector Five slums. Her demeanor is cheerful and compassionate, tending to flowers within a dilapidated church and offering them for sale to the locals with the intention of bringing joy into their lives. However, it’s later disclosed that she’s a fugitive sought by Shinra because she’s the last representative of the Cetra, an old race connected to the Life Stream. Furthermore, she plays a romantic role for both Cloud and Zack, and her presence helps alleviate the game’s more somber moments.

Regrettably, those who experienced the original game are familiar with Aerith’s tragic end. This scene is renowned as one of the most impactful in video game lore. In both the original and subsequent remakes like ‘Remake’ and ‘Rebirth’, Aerith is a formidable mage within the party, excelling in healing spells. Notably older than Cid and Tifa, Aerith carries an wisdom that surpasses her years.

However, it soon becomes apparent that his past is far more complex than initially perceived. You see, beneath the bravado lies a grunt who was merely enhanced with an excessive dose of Mako. The original game did an outstanding job at revealing Cloud’s character depth, and the remake and Rebirth have only added layers to this already intriguing figure.

In combat, Cloud leans more towards close-quarters melee battles, effortlessly switching between operator and punisher modes to dissect any adversaries that dare cross his path. With a legacy as legendary as Cloud’s in the JRPG world, it’s safe to say that these new iterations have only served to further refine an already exceptional character.

2. Tifa Lockhart

Don’t Mess With This Bartender

Tifa, often seen as Cloud’s childhood sweetheart or romantic interest, is far more complex than that. Although she may appear timid, she can display great fierceness and is an absolute powerhouse. Initially, Yuffie was known for being one of the most irritating characters in the original game due to her habit of stealing from the party and her brattish behavior. However, in the latest games, she’s been reintroduced as the main character in the INTERmission DLC of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and she has evolved to be a more endearing character. Now, she comes across as playful rather than bratty, and her bond with Cloud is significantly stronger.
