The following article contains spoilers for Akane-banashi Episode 1.
The anime Akane-banashi has just been released! It’s based on the popular manga of the same name, which has been featured in Shonen Jump since 2022 and has received a lot of positive feedback. Many fans predict it will become a hit this season, potentially reaching the same level of popularity as shows like One Piece or JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
The first episode introduces Akane’s path to becoming a Rakugo performer and hints that her story will be about both her personal growth and seeking justice for what happened to her father – his seemingly unfair removal from the Rakugo community. The anime is delivering on its promise so far.
The Sudden Downfall of Shinta Arakawa

Before the story focuses on the main character, we meet Shinta Arakawa, also known as Tohru Osaki, Akane’s father. He’s been performing Rakugo for thirteen years and is preparing for an important test that could earn him the title of Shin’uchi – the highest rank a Rakugo performer can achieve.
Although Tohru doesn’t make much money as a Rakugo performer, his family has always been supportive. His wife, Misaki, and daughter, Akane, have never asked him to give it up, even when money was tight. In fact, Akane deeply admires her father and loves watching him perform. She often watches his rehearsals and even starts copying his mannerisms, hinting that she’ll one day become involved in Rakugo herself.
This episode introduces young Akane through a traditional Japanese storytelling performance where she explains why she got upset with a classmate. The class was asked to write about someone they admired, and Akane wrote about her father, but a classmate made fun of her, leading to an argument. It’s already obvious that Akane is a remarkably talented actress.

What starts as an inspiring story about a father striving for recognition as a Rakugo master unexpectedly becomes a tale of an artist’s tragic decline. Tohru is competing against other performers from the Arakawa School, each giving individual performances judged by both a panel of experts and the audience. This means the audience’s reaction is the primary way the Rakugoka can measure their success during the performance.
The Rakugo candidates were allowed to perform and adapt existing stories, as long as they maintained the central plot. Tohru chose the play “Shibahama,” but surprisingly removed its only beach scene. He did this intentionally to showcase his acting skills, and it seemed to captivate the audience. However, at the conclusion of the evaluations, the renowned Rakugo performer Master Issho unexpectedly announced that he was dismissing everyone, including Tohru. The official explanation was never given to the candidates, but Issho appeared particularly upset with Tohru’s performance, seemingly because it prioritized innovation over traditional Rakugo elements.
You can’t call that thing Shibahama.
— Master Issho
Although the full impact isn’t obvious yet, Tohru was heartbroken because achieving this dream was his life’s work. It seems he also had to take a job to help Masaki provide for the family. Now, a few years later, Akane is in high school and is probably starting her career in Rakugo. She’s sure to become one of the most memorable female characters in anime.
Should You Watch Akane-banashi If You Haven’t Read the Manga?
This season’s new anime, Akane-banashi, is off to a strong start and looks like it could be a real success. The series is based on a popular manga, and the first episode featured impressive animation. A standout moment is Tohru’s performance – the entire sequence, from him walking onto the stage, is particularly well done. The director took some creative risks, and the scene effectively captures both the pressure of the situation and the excitement of the crowd.
Because it’s a brand new series, you don’t need to know anything about the original manga – you can jump right in and enjoy it. While the show takes some creative liberties with its presentation, the story itself is easy to follow and won’t confuse new viewers. Overall, it’s been a fantastic watch so far.
