Akira Toriyama’s Surprising Role in Dragon Ball Daima Revealed!

Summary

  • Toriyama became deeply involved in Dragon Ball DAIMA, deviating from the original plan of just consulting.
  • Daima was influenced by Dragon Ball GT, with Toriyama suggesting making Goku smaller to appeal to a wider audience.
  • A sequel to Daima is uncertain, but a worldwide release was aimed for. The series will continue but production takes time.

In a recent exclusive interview on MantanWeb, I had the privilege of gaining insights from Dragon Ball DAIMA’s producer, Akio Iyuko, who shed light on the extent of Akira Toriyama’s involvement in the series.

The series known as “Dragon Ball Daima” has gained a unique status following Toriyama’s demise, being the last Dragon Ball project carrying his distinct style – an unforeseen farewell masterpiece. Yet, some fans have voiced doubts about the franchise creator’s level of involvement in it.

During the interview, Iyuko mentioned that initially, they merely intended to seek some guidance and advice from Toriyama. Yet, as events unfolded, Toriyama grew increasingly passionate about the project, gradually immersing himself more deeply, until ultimately, he made a significant contribution to it.

Approximately six years ago, as Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was being made, we began discussing the idea of creating a fresh series instead. Since production on the movie was ongoing, I didn’t want to overburden Toriyama, so I merely sought his opinions and thoughts on the concept. As things progressed, he became increasingly enthusiastic about it. In contrast to our initial plan, which only involved consulting him, he ended up taking a much larger role in the project.

In simpler terms, it could be said that Toriyama wondered about the nature of the Demon Realm and its new inhabitants, which eventually led to the creation and development of the Daima world.

Dragon Ball GT As a Starting Point

As he explained, when the anime was initially being developed, the storyline wasn’t completely finalized and required extensive writing. He further disclosed that the controversial “Dragon Ball GT” served as a launching pad for “Daima,” and it was Akira Toriyama who suggested not only diminishing Goku but also reducing the size of all other characters.

As an onlooker, it seems the creators intended to design a fresh series that would resonate with a broader demographic – particularly parents who fondly remember watching Dragon Ball during their own childhood years, now having the opportunity to share this experience with their kids.

It appears that Iyoku acknowledged that Toriyama was not just an advisor and that the new story is indeed a sequel to Dragon Ball Z. However, Iyoku didn’t seem too concerned with maintaining the series’ strict chronology or “canon.” Instead, it seems connected to the original narrative, but we can assume there may be more on Toriyama’s mind regarding this continuation.

Could A Dragon Ball Daima Sequel Be On The Way?

When questioned about a possible follow-up to the story, Iyoku gives the impression that they don’t have many ideas at the moment, but they might still develop some. They express that they intended for a global release, even though they weren’t certain of the story’s success. Furthermore, Iyoku mentions that “Dragon Ball” will carry on (without referring to “Daima” explicitly). However, producing anime is a time-consuming process as it demands careful planning.

It’s currently airing on Crunchyroll, following the Japanese broadcast, with new episodes appearing on Hulu and Netflix a week after.
