A few days past, I noticed Rakuten had unveiled the initial volume of a fresh manga by Masahiro Anbe, renowned as the mastermind behind the “Squid Girl” series. No plans for magazine serialization appear to be on the horizon, suggesting this work might leap directly into tankobon format, skipping any prior publication in magazines.
In fact, the confirmation has come through that the upcoming title will definitely appear serialized in a magazine. As expected, it’s set to debut on June 6, and it appears that the serialization process has already started.
Kodansha announced that the series will begin earlier than expected, starting publication in Young Magazine on February 3, 2025, adhering to the weekly release cycle of the magazine.
What We Know About The New Manga
The recently released manga goes by the title “Akuma de Fukei“, a clever play on words that could mean either “disrespecting the devil” or “protecting the devil”. Since it’s written in hiragana instead of kanji, its true meaning remains ambiguous. This creative approach allows both interpretations to be plausible, as they both seem fitting for the storyline.
Essentially, we’re dealing with a romantic comedy that unfolds in a small-town police station. The main character, Eclair, is a quirky demon disguised as a policewoman. She’s taken up residence in a police box, on the hunt for a human to serve her. Her colleague, Daichi Kuwahara, wishes to return her to the demon realm, but her accident-prone nature keeps him from carrying out his plan.
Other Works By Masahiro Anbe
The well-known character Anbe is best recognized for her role in “Squid Girl,” a narrative that follows a squid girl’s quest to rule the world and seek retribution against human pollution in the oceans. She operates from a beach in Japan, but unintentionally damages a local eatery during her endeavors. As a result, she is obligated to work as a waitress at this restaurant owned by the Aizawa siblings, to make amends for the damage caused.
Following the conclusion of “Squid Girl,” Anbe began serializing an unofficially published work titled “Let’s Gather, Strange Research Club” (in English).
In the United States, it’s Sentai Filmworks who have acquired the rights for adapting the anime series titled “Squid Girl.” However, the original manga of this series is yet to be translated and published in English.
