Alan Wake 2’s Lake House DLC Is About to Miss the Boat

Alan Wake 2's Lake House DLC Is About to Miss the Boat

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt and countless hours spent in the dark, twisted worlds of Remedy Entertainment, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and confusion regarding the upcoming DLC for Alan Wake 2, The Lake House.

On September 24, 2024, during the PlayStation State of Play event, it was announced that the October release window for the final expansion of Alan Wake 2, titled The Lake House, has been set. This downloadable content for the story-centric action-horror game seems to be connecting Alan Wake 2 back into the broader universe created by Remedy Entertainment, much like Control’s last expansion, AWE, did. It is possible that it will also introduce Control’s protagonist, Jesse Faden, to address a new predicament involving the Federal Bureau of Control near Bright Falls, similar to how AWE brought Jesse into the story. The trailer for The Lake House didn’t reveal many specifics, but uncovering the answers is an essential part of the experience in Alan Wake 2.

Regardless of what lies within The Lake House, fans can look forward to diving into it shortly without much delay. During Summer Game Fest in June, Night Springs and its three potential storylines captivated players upon sudden release, and whether The Lake House is another hypothetical tale, the introduction of a canonical Jesse, or more adventures with Saga and Alan, it’s on its way soon. Interestingly, the apparent proximity of The Lake House’s release date might be the most puzzling aspect about it – fittingly ironic for Remedy Entertainment.

The Lake House’s Release Window Only Revealed More Questions

Although The Lake House was hinted at in reference to Alan Wake 2 prior to its October 2023 launch, Remedy Entertainment didn’t reveal any details until the September 24 State of Play event. Excited fans were informed by a summer FAQ that this final DLC would be released around October 2024. However, there’s a twist: Although the State of Play was broadcast a week before October begins, Alan Wake 2’s Control-themed DLC only received an October release window, not a specific date.

Unpacking the Circumstances of Alan Wake 2’s Latest Trailer

It’s perplexing why this decision about the release date for the DLC wasn’t clearer, especially since it seems like the development isn’t completed yet and Remedy hasn’t confirmed a specific release date. However, it appears that they took advantage of the State of Play event on September 24, which was likely the last major platform to announce news about Alan Wake 2 before The Lake House was ready. This suggests that Remedy secured a trailer slot at this event, probably because they wanted to capitalize on the increased visibility for Alan Wake 2 in the lead-up to The Lake House’s readiness. It’s puzzling why they couldn’t give a definite date for the DLC launch, even though it appears to be nearly ready enough for them to set a launch window.

Figuring Out When Alan Wake 2’s Lake House Expansion Will Launch

Fans might never fully understand why Remedy Entertainment decided to promote the last Alan Wake 2 expansion in such a way, but at least we can expect it to arrive soon. The last significant reveal of an Alan Wake project was back at a PlayStation event, when they announced the release date for Alan Wake Remastered on October 5, 2021, during the September 9, 2021, PlayStation Showcase. Even though there was a specified launch date then, it still took approximately a month for Alan Wake Remastered to become available, so it’s possible that the same timeline applies to The Lake House.

Late October Is A Fitting Time For The Lake House

It would make perfect sense for the debut of “The Lake House” to occur on October 27 specifically, given that this marks the anniversary of “Alan Wake 2.” Initially, Alan Wake 2 was delayed by ten days in 2023, but it seemed like a strategic move to steer clear of “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” and “Super Mario Bros. Wonder,” while still maintaining an October release that aligns with its themes. It’s also possible that “The Lake House” might surprise us just as “Night Springs” did, and Remedy is simply readying fans for such a possibility. Notably, the last piece of DLC for “Alan Wake 2” is expected in October, though this announcement could potentially come very close to the actual release date.
