Summary
- James Bond sparked an enduring love for spy films worldwide, inspiring many franchises and parodies we know today.
- Alexander Skarsgård (perhaps jokingly) sees opportunity to provide a new spin on the spy genre fueled by his military past and sense of diplomacy.
- Skarsgård’s versatility in action and drama roles positions him well to headline a future spy franchise or series.
These days, the situation surrounding James Bond seems uncertain, as there’s been no word about where the series will go following Daniel Craig’s final appearance in No Time to Die over four years ago. Amazon and MGM are being patient with Bond, but one international actor is eager to step into the role, offering a unique take on the spy genre.
Ever since James Bond first appeared on the big screen in the 1960s, the spy thriller genre has become a cherished part of cinema. It appears that espionage as a topic never runs out of ideas. Although shows like The Saint and OSS 117 were around before Bond took his first martini, it was Bond who sparked the fire that’s been burning ever since. One wonders if characters such as Lupin the Third, Ethan Hunt, and Jason Bourne would exist without Bond’s influence, or if we wouldn’t have funny spoofs like Austin Powers and Johnny English, or the Spy Kids movies with their ordinary kid-like qualities. The Kingsman series might lack its signature high-tech gadgetry without Bond paving the way for over six decades now. That’s why James Bond has remained relevant in one form or another for more than sixty years.
Fortunately for fans of spy movies worldwide, Alexander Skarsgård is eager to take on more roles in this genre. In a recent interview with The Times of London, Skarsgård mentioned his past military service, saying, “I joined up because I was 19 and didn’t know what I wanted to do, and I wanted to be like James Bond for 18 months.” When the interviewer suggested that Skarsgård could play James Bond on screen, the actor enthusiastically agreed. He proposed a more diplomatic, polite version of the character: “I could portray a very courteous, Swedish James Bond who works towards finding solutions,” he said. “There would be no physical violence at all. It would mainly involve tense boardroom meetings where people strive for agreement, everyone’s stressed out, and they desperately try to avoid conflicts or complications… That’s very much in line with the Swedish way of thinking.
Alexander Skarsgård May Not Be Perfect For James Bond, But He Could Headline His Own Spy Series
Alexander Skarsgard played around during that interview, yet the notion of him leading a new spy movie franchise isn’t entirely far-fetched. With his extensive acting background, he certainly has the talent to shoulder such a role. Despite some critics’ opinions on films like The Legend of Tarzan, Battleship, and Godzilla vs. Kong, Skarsgard demonstrated his skill in action scenes throughout these productions. His performance in the 2022 film, The Northman, while more of a prestige drama than an action movie, showcased his proficiency in fight sequences as well.
Employing the acting prowess he’s exhibited in productions such as “Big Little Lies”, “Succession”, and “True Blood”, Alexander Skarsgård could potentially become the next big action star. However, when asked about joining a spy franchise, he seems hesitant, preferring a different genre. The forthcoming “Murderbot” series on Apple TV+ seems to align more with his interests. While fans eagerly anticipate the next installment of James Bond, speculating about Skarsgård spearheading a new spy franchise could serve as an engaging distraction in the meantime.
