With so many survival games available, Subnautica and its sequel, Subnautica 2, really shine. These games challenge players to survive in the underwater worlds of two different planets. They’ve become incredibly popular and well-regarded thanks to their original gameplay and compelling story. While everything about Subnautica is well-done, its diverse and fascinating creatures are particularly impressive.

As a big Subnautica fan, I’m constantly amazed by the creatures in the game. From the cute little peepers to the weird Crabsquid, every single one feels so imaginative! But honestly, nothing beats the Leviathan class organisms. They’re huge – seriously, some are the size of buses, others are like… skyscrapers! The Subnautica community loves talking about them, and for good reason. There’s a ton of different Leviathan types, ranging from mildly unsettling to absolutely terrifying. It’s incredible how much variety there is in their size, even amongst creatures that are already gigantic. You think you know how big they are, but seeing them compared to each other is always a shock!

18. Squidshark – Subnautica

The Squidshark is currently the smallest creature classified as a Leviathan in the Subnautica series. The Squidshark first appeared in the game Subnautica and is known for aggressively attacking players who get too close. It’s a frightening combination of a squid and a shark, taking the most dangerous traits from both. While not enormous, it’s still much larger than the player and can defeat them quickly with just a few bites.

17. Sea Treader – Subnautica

The Sea Treader is a relatively small Leviathan, though it still reaches 20 meters long – a considerable size. It lives on the seafloor and is almost twice as long as a bus. Even young Sea Treaders are much larger than humans. However, compared to other Leviathans, the Sea Treader isn’t particularly intimidating.

How To Deal With Sea Treaders

Sea Treaders aren’t naturally aggressive, but they will attack if anything gets too close to their group. Their strong legs can deliver a fatal blow to divers who aren’t careful, so it’s best to give them plenty of space. If you’re collecting uprooted ore, wait until the Sea Treaders have moved past before approaching.

16. Glow Whale – Subnautica

The Glow Whale is the smallest of the Leviathan creatures in the game Subnautica: Below Zero. It measures 30 meters long and is quite wide. To give you a sense of its size, it’s a bit bigger than a basketball court! Barnacles and plants even grow on its huge body. However, when compared to other Leviathans, the Glow Whale isn’t as impressively large.

How To Deal With Glow Whales

Glow Whales are gentle giants and completely harmless. You have nothing to fear from them, so feel free to approach and even ride these amazing creatures when you get the chance!

15. Great Jaw – Subnautica 2

The Great Jaw is a massive, stationary clam, and you might think it’s harmless. But it grows Lithium inside its shells – a very rare resource in Subnautica 2. To get the Lithium, you have to venture between the clam’s shells, which is incredibly risky because a single mistake could mean being swallowed whole!

If you sense the massive mouth closing in on you, swim upwards immediately—unless you want to be dissolved in the corrosive fluids of a giant clam.

14. Shiver Leviathan – Subnautica 2

The Shiver Leviathan is a massive predator in Subnautica 2, but you won’t encounter it during normal gameplay. The Shiver Leviathan, along with smaller Shiver Leviathans, will aggressively attack, and can instantly destroy you, your vehicles, or anything else that moves. A useful strategy for spotting and scanning it is to briefly enter the restricted area, then quickly retreat back to the safe zone. Repeat this process as the Leviathan approaches to gain enough time to scan it completely.

13. Chelicerate – Subnautica

The Chelicerate is a relatively small, but still dangerous, Leviathan in the game. Measuring 40 meters long – about the size of a small airplane – its head makes up a significant portion of its body. Even its alternate, void-touched form isn’t particularly large compared to other Leviathans.

How To Deal With Chelicerates

Let me tell you, these Chelicerates are genuinely terrifying. They’re incredibly territorial and will relentlessly chase anything that wanders into their space. Avoiding them is a real challenge, and escaping once they’ve spotted you feels nearly impossible. Your best bet? Try squeezing through tight spaces or, if you’re feeling brave, just outrun them. Otherwise, you’re pretty much relying on luck and hoping they don’t notice you. Seriously, these creatures are not messing around.

12. Collector Leviathan – Subnautica 2
