Octopath Traveler 0 features 35 different characters players can recruit to join the main heroes on their adventure across Osterra. You might expect a large JRPG like this to offer hints about where and when to find them, but it doesn’t always do so.

Success in Octopath Traveler II often depends on timing and location – missing opportunities can prevent you from recruiting certain characters, especially if you’re overwhelmed by everything the game offers. Your initial choices also impact which additional characters become available, so refer to this guide to discover them all.

All Characters in Octopath Traveler 0 & How To Recruit Them

Here’s a list of all the characters you can permanently add to your party during the game. The third row of the list details where to find them and what you need to do to recruit them.

These requirements usually involve finishing a part of the main story, or being in a specific place while you finish a particular quest.

The Quest Tab in the main menu displays opportunities to recruit new characters as ‘Secondary Quests,’ so it’s important for players to check it regularly to make sure they don’t miss out.

Phenn Hunter Travel to Snowshard Grotto during Kindlers of the Flame Ch. 1, and Invite him to Wishvale
Celsus Thief Complete Kindlers of the Flame Ch. 1, travel to Valore and look for him in the tavern. Convince him to join after a brief cutscene.
Viator Warrior Must have Crested Key (Belonging Choice from Character Creation) and recruit him in Valore, after talking to the Bard at the Inn.
Saoirse Dancer Find her after defeating Auguste in Master of Fame Ch. 3, at Theatropolis Theater, must rehearse a dance in the correct order, choosing the ‘elegant’ options.
Tressa Merchant Find her in Rippletide, during Kindlers of the Flame Ch 2. Help her with her personal quest, then recruit her after the final cutscene.
Macy Apothecary Find her at Emberglow, after completing Kindlers of the Flame Ch 3. Help her heal the boy by purchasing Invigorating Herb from the merchant, then she’ll join the party.
Pius Cleric Meet him during Kindlers of the Flame Ch. 3, in Cragspear, then go back to Wishvale to visit your mother’s grave with him. He will then ask to join the party.
Ludo Merchant After completing Kindlers of the Flame Ch. 3, find Ludo in Sunshade, and complete his personal quest to recruit him.
Laurana Cleric Recruited during Kindlers of the Flame Ch. 4, after helping her defeat the Emerald Direwolf Boss.
Delitia Hunter Recruited while completing Master of Power Ch. 2. Players must first beat her in a Contest of Strength (battle) and then accept her personal quest.
Alexia Scholar Found in Theatropolis Library during Master of Fame Ch. 2. Entreat her to recruit, or have the ‘Letter Fragment’ special item from Character creation to recruit her early.
Esperre Merchant Find him in Sufrataljah Sands, during Bestower of Wealth Ch. 3, recruit him after completing his request.
Reime Warrior Travel ot Victor’s Hollow after completing Bestower of Wealth Ch. 2, and recruit after defeating her in the Arena.
Goodwin Dancer Find him at Shipwreck Island. Requires Ratatouille (dish) to be recruited.
Ophilia Cleric Find her in Flamesgrace after beating Edwing during Bestower of Power Ch. 2.
Xerc Scholar Can be located and recruited in Grandport after beating the Immortal noble
Heidne Thief Recruited in Wishvale during the ‘Bestower of All’ Final Chapter.
Cyrus Scholar Found in Atlasdam Flats while completing Bestower of Fame Ch. 3.
H’aanit Hunter During Bestower of Wealth Ch.2, travel to Victor’s Hollow and talk to her to start the recruitment quest.
Olberic Warrior Recruited at Shepherd’s Rock during the Bestower of All Quest.
Therion Thief Found in Cragspear during the Master of All Ch. 3. quest. Complete his request to recruit.
Primrose Dancer Find her in Sunshade, during Master of All Ch. 3. Complete her request to recruit her.
Alfyn Apothecary Players can find him in the Path to Waterpool Caves. Players will need to complete his personal request to recruit him.
Bargello Lord Progress down the Main Story up to Bestower of All Ch. 1 to automatically recruit him.
Alaune Queen Complete Bestower of All Ch. 3 to automatically recruit her after the chapter’s ending.
Richard King Complete Bestower of All Ch. 1 to automatically recruit him.
Eltrix Captain Joins the party automatically upon completing Ch. 5 of Bestower of All.
Solon Wise King Joins the party automatically upon completing Ch. 5 of Bestower of All.
Rondo Knight Ardante Joins the party automatically after completing Ch 4. of Bestower of All.
Tatloch Empress Joins the party automatically after completing Ch 4. of Bestower of All.
Isla Cait Scholar Find her on the Isle of Sages after completing the Master of All Quest. Players need to collect the 5 Letter Fragments (one can be obtained by picking it up in the character choices at the beginning of the game, and another one is owned by Alexa).
Carinda Merchant Find her at Donescu. Recruited during Bestower of All.

You’ll need to advance the story to unlock certain characters. Specifically, getting Pius and Laurana involves completing the Wishvale reconstruction Main Quest, which is required before you can open Blue Chests.

In addition to the 33 playable characters, there are 3 more who have special abilities and can only be recruited for a limited time during certain quests. Be warned: details about these characters are major spoilers, so proceed with caution!

  • Schwartz: Temporarily recruited as Back Line Character during the Master of Fame Ch. 2 and 3.
  • Sazantoz: Temporarily recruited during the completion of Trial of the Ring (Finale).
  • Elrica: Joins the party temporarily after completing Ch. 1 of Master of All.
