In the world of Pokémon, Mega Evolution stands out as a highly acclaimed feature. This enigmatic process empowers trainers with the ability to unveil a spectacular and formidable new form for their Pokémon, which can significantly shift the balance in even the most intense battles.
Since 2013, the Mega Evolution mechanic has been present in Pokemon games, but unfortunately, it hasn’t reappeared in all subsequent titles following its initial introduction. For those who might be unsure about which Pokemon games support Mega Evolution and which ones don’t, this guide aims to provide clarity. It will outline the games where Mega Evolution is accessible, as well as upcoming releases that plan to reinstate it after a seven-year hiatus.
Pokemon X And Y
The Games That Introduced Mega Evolution
The launch of Pokemon X and Y marked a significant milestone for the franchise, as they were the first main series games to feature 3D graphics, but their appeal extended beyond that. These games introduced the intriguing mechanic of Mega Evolution, which instantly captivated the entire fanbase. A total of eighteen Mega Evolutions were added in Pokemon X and Y, including Mega Mewtwo, Mega Gengar, Mega Scizor, Mega Blaziken, Mega Gardevoir, and many others.
As a gamer, I found it peculiar that during regular playthroughs, we could only Mega Evolve two Pokémon: Mega Lucario and whichever Kanto starter I’d picked in Lumiose City. What made this even more surprising was the limited use of Mega Evolutions by NPCs, with only Korrina, Lysandre, and Diantha employing them against me. However, it’s undeniable that this feature drastically changed the competitive scene, with many Mega Evolutions becoming as formidable as Legendary Pokémon in the Uber tier when battling online.
Pokemon Omega Ruby And Alpha Sapphire
The Hoenn Remakes Put A Bigger Emphasis On Mega Evolution
Approximately a year and a half since the initial event involving X and Y, longtime Pokemon enthusiasts were rewarded with the generation three remakes they had eagerly anticipated for over a decade: Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. These two games, now rendered in stunning 3D, boasted numerous enhancements to gameplay quality and featured a multitude of improvements. Yet, they also capitalized on the recently unveiled Mega Evolution mechanic, first introduced in the previous release.
In the games Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, a total of eighteen new Mega Evolutions were introduced, with many of these transformations belonging to Hoenn region native Pokémon such as Mega Camerupt, Mega Sharpedo, Mega Sableye, Mega Sceptile, and Mega Swampert (completing the Starter Trio following Mega Blaziken’s debut in X and Y). Moreover, Mega Rayquaza also made its first appearance in these remakes, quickly earning a reputation as one of the most powerful Pokémon ever created. Notably, many Non-Player Characters (NPCs), including the entire Elite 4 and the Champion, opted to undergo Mega Evolution with their signature Pokémon during their initial meetings, adding an extra layer of excitement and challenge to the overall gaming experience.
Pokemon Sun And Moon/Ultra Sun And Ultra Moon
Mega Evolution Took A Backseat In Generation Seven
In Pokemon Sun and Moon, a new era for Pokemon began – the seventh generation. This update introduced a fresh battle mechanic to replace Mega Evolution, called Z-Moves. Yet, even with these dramatic single-use moves entering the scene, Mega Evolution remained accessible during this period. As a result, both mechanisms were capable of influencing each other in combat.
As a dedicated fan, I must confess that while I immensely enjoyed my journey through both Sun and Moon as well as their sequels, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, there was a disappointing aspect: the absence of fresh Mega Evolutions. This fan-favorite feature took a backstage during this entire generation, vanishing from the main storyline and only making an appearance in the post-game content.
What made this even more peculiar was the inclusion of Pokedex entries for all Mega Evolved forms, yet these descriptions portrayed the transformations as harmful to the Pokemon, causing them distress and altering their behavior in a negative way. This discrepancy left me scratching my head throughout my adventure.
Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu And Let’s Go Eevee
Mega Evolution’s Final Appearance Was Quite Underwhelming
In 2018, Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee, two new reimaginings of the original Pokémon games, were launched by Game Freak and The Pokémon Company. These games incorporated the simpler catching mechanics from Pokémon GO, offering a 3D remake of the Kanto region that was quite engaging. However, to keep things fresh and distinct from past remakes, several new features and gameplay elements were introduced, including Mega Evolution being one of them.
Nevertheless, there was a caveat: while Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee only incorporate Pokemon from the first generation, only previously existing Mega Evolutions from that era were incorporated, with no new ones added. Although the inclusion of Mega Evolutions enhanced the experience by making it more enjoyable and challenging, it’s important to note that these games lacked some fundamental aspects of the series – such as abilities and held items – which diminished their influence on gameplay compared to previous installments.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Mega Evolution Is Finally Back After Seven Long Years
Regrettably, the mainline Pokemon games “Let’s Go Pikachu” and “Let’s Go Eevee” were the last to feature Mega Evolution, as Generation Eight discarded this mechanism in favor of Dynamax/Gigantamax. This change left many Pokemon fans disappointed, as they had been requesting for years that Game Freak reintroduce Mega Evolution. Unfortunately, it wasn’t included even in the initial games of Generation Nine, “Scarlet” and “Violet”, which instead emphasized its own new mechanic, Terastallization.
Z-A” is the newest installment in the series, and fans are thrilled about it because Mega Evolution is making a comeback in this game, playing a significant role in both its narrative and mechanics. Interestingly, The Pokemon Company and Nintendo have focused their marketing on showcasing Mega Evolved Pokémon, despite only unveiling two new ones before the release – Mega Dragonite and Mega Victreebel (for now).
Pokemon Champions
Mega Evolutions, Z-Moves, And Terastallization Will Finally Meet In One Game
In addition to the highly anticipated revival of Mega Evolution, set to occur with the release of “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” this year, it’s also expected that “Pokemon Champions” will debut in 2026. This free-to-play game primarily focused on battling will enable players to compete online in various formats. One of its major appeals lies in the incorporation of numerous classic battle mechanics simultaneously.
As a dedicated Pokémon trainer, I’m pumped! This latest update means that Mega Evolutions, Z-Moves, and Terastallization are all set to mix things up together in the same game (we’re still waiting for confirmation on Dynamax/Gigantamax). Gear up for some epic encounters packed with tough choices and thrilling outcomes!
Although Pokémon Champions won’t feature a single-player mode, it looks like players will get to bring any Mega Evolved Pokémon that made their debut in past games such as X and Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Legends: Z-A. The diverse battles are just going to get even more exciting!
