So, the new Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A is awesome because it brings back tons of Pokémon I remember! But, like always, Game Freak decided to lock shinies on a bunch of them, which is super frustrating for those of us who love hunting those rare, sparkly versions. It’s a bit of a bummer, honestly.
Shiny Locked Pokémon are a common part of the Pokémon games, but certain Pokémon can’t be found in their rare, shiny form, no matter how much players try. This means some Pokémon are permanently unavailable as shinies.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A continues the tradition of locking certain Pokémon from appearing as Shiny versions. TopMob has compiled a complete list of these Pokémon, so you won’t waste time trying to find a Shiny that’s impossible to get.
All Shiny Locked Pokémon in Mega Dimension DLC

As a huge Pokémon Legends: Z-A fan, I’m so excited to hear that there are 15 Pokémon guaranteed to be Shiny Locked in the Mega Dimension DLC! It sounds like you’ll be able to find them as you play through the story, by completing extra missions after the main game, and even as gifts. That’s awesome!
Most of the extra Pokémon available as DLC that can’t be found in their shiny colors are Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, following a pattern seen in recent games. However, a few important exceptions to this rule exist, and we’ll cover those shortly.
As a Pokémon fan, I was checking out the Mega Dimension DLC, and I found a list (thanks to Serebii!) of all the Pokémon you can’t find in their shiny forms. Basically, these ones are ‘Shiny Locked’ – meaning you won’t be able to encounter the special, colorful versions in the game.
| Pokémon | Details |
|---|---|
| Heatran | Static Encounter |
| Darkrai | Static Encounter |
| Kyogre | Static Encounter |
| Groudon | Static Encounter |
| Rayquaza | Static Encounter |
| Meloetta | Static Encounter |
| Genesect | Static Encounter |
| Magearna | Static Encounter |
| Marshadow | Static Encounter |
| Zeraora | Static Encounter |
| Hoopa | Static Encounter |
| Volcanion | Static Encounter |
| Meltan | Static Encounter |
| Melmetal | Static Encounter |
| Gimmighoul | Gift |
The Gimmighoul you get as a gift in the Mega Dimension DLC is special and can’t be Shiny, but you can find and catch other Gimmighoul in Hyperspace Lumiose, and those wild ones can be Shiny.
Which Pokémon Are Not Shiny Locked in Mega Dimension DLC?
In the Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC, you can find Shiny versions of any Pokémon not specifically listed in the game’s table, and this includes many Legendary Pokémon.
After you finish the main story in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you can find shiny versions of Latios, Latias, Cobalion, Virizion, and Terrakion in the Mega Dimension. Be aware that finding them will take patience and many attempts, but this is currently the best way to hunt for shiny Pokémon in any game!
Which Shiny Pokémon are you hoping to find in Pokémon Legends: Z-A? Let us know your thoughts and discuss them with other fans on the TopMob Discord server!
