The response to Gamescom’s Opening Night Live has varied compared to other major press events in 2025. However, the atmosphere on the show floor is quite lively since there are numerous games available for testing. Furthermore, even more exhilarating games have been unveiled at other events such as the Future Games Show apart from ONL.

2026 and beyond promises an exciting chapter for the worldwide gaming economy, with varying reactions yet abundant discussions about games to delve into, regardless of their availability at launch. Particularly intriguing are several upcoming Soulslike titles, which have either unveiled trailers or been announced during Gamescom 2025 by both established AAA developers and innovative indie teams. These new Soulslikes, showcased at the event, are definitely worth adding to your Steam Wishlist as more details emerge.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui

The King Of Ghosts

The game “Black Myth: Zhong Kui” was the one selected to conclude Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event. The trailer was entirely computer-generated, displaying a demon riding a massive tiger, who appears to be the main character, Zhong Kui, in Chinese folklore. In mythology, Zhong Kui pursued evil spirits, making it an appropriate foundation for a video game. It is being developed by Game Science, the team behind “Black Myth: Wukong”.

Wukong provided a Soulslike gaming experience, so it’s reasonable to anticipate similar gameplay from the upcoming game Black Myth: Zhong Kui. However, given that players might need to wait a while before they can play it. The development of Black Myth: Wukong began prior to its first trailer release in 2020, and even earlier than that. This suggests that Black Myth: Zhong Kui, following this initial teaser, may still be quite some time away. As of now, the game is only confirmed for PC, but it’s possible that it might also appear on consoles in the future.

Kaiden

Samurai Souls

  • Developer: 5th Column Studio
  • Publisher: 5th Column Studio
  • Planned Release: TBA

Kaiden is a relatively unseen game, and did not make an appearance during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event. This will be the debut project from 5th Column Studio, and based on its first trailer, it appears to hold great potential. In the preview, a samurai is depicted battling a larger samurai, with the scene ending rather ominously with a spider-like creature. Judging by the trailer, it can be inferred that players can expect to encounter both regular samurais and demons in this upcoming Souls-like game.

Nioh has already established itself as one of the prominent samurai-based Soulslike games, but there’s still room for a newcomer like Kaiden to carve out its own niche in the genre. The screenshots on Steam provide additional gameplay glimpses, featuring a snowy environment and stealth assassinations. At this point, details about the game’s release platforms beyond PC and the specific launch date remain undisclosed.

La Divina Commedia

Another Shot At Hell

During Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, one of the trailers displayed was for The Divine Comedy, although it seemed more like a cinematic preview rather than actual gameplay. In this sneak peek, a knight without a name encountered a peculiar puppet-like figure within a woodland setting. While details are scarce, the overall atmosphere suggested strong elements of folklore, despite being adapted from the renowned epic poem.

Jyamma Games, the creator behind it, has developed “Enotria: The Last Song,” a Soulslike game from 2024 that revolves around Italian folklore.

Meanwhile, “The Divine Comedy” is an epic poem penned by Dante Alighieri during the 1300s that narrates a man’s passage through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Although not the first game to be inspired by this work, Electronic Arts (EA) previously released “Dante’s Inferno” in 2010. In another language, “La Divina Commedia” is how you might refer to “The Divine Comedy.

Lords Of The Fallen 2

The Second Sequel

In simpler terms, although Lords of the Fallen 2 is being advertised as the second game in the series, it’s actually the third, following a reboot of the original game released in 2014. The 2014 game was one of the early Soulslike games, and its 2023 reboot is now getting a sequel. A compelling trailer for Lords of the Fallen 2 was unveiled during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, featuring an epic narrator discussing a war against gods.

The game is expected to be launched in 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, it will only be available through the Epic Games Store for PC users. Despite being close to its release, a CG cutscene was all that was revealed, but fans of the previous installments should have a good idea of what’s in store. The game promises various character classes, weapons, and numerous divine bosses to defeat.

Swords Of Legends

A Long-Running Series Comes To North America

The game titled Swords of Legends is another upcoming title that follows the Soulslike genre and is rooted in Chinese mythology, similar to Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Interestingly, it’s part of a vast franchise, Gujian, which has been exclusive to China until now. Fortunately, newcomers should find the game’s storyline accessible, as they will assume the role of a warrior on a mission to eliminate demons in ancient China. In essence, it’s about battling supernatural foes in China’s rich historical backdrop.

In the preview, an intriguing demon without a head was depicted engaging in battles within dense bamboo groves, accompanied by a flaming dragon. The game’s descriptions hint that players can seize souls from foes and later employ them for combat purposes, reminiscent of both _Pokemon_ or _Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow_. While details about the release date and platforms other than PC for _Swords of Legends_ are still scarce, the trailer presented during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event did showcase some gameplay.

Valor Mortis

Face Napoleon In A Soulslike

As an ardent gaming enthusiast, I couldn’t help but be captivated by “Valor Mortis” during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live pre-show. Some believe that this pre-show boasted a more impressive lineup of game trailers than the main event itself!

This one-of-a-kind Soulslike game truly stood out among the crowd, thanks to its distinctive perspective and theme. In “Valor Mortis”, I find myself embodying a character who once served in Napoleon’s army but now hunts down former comrades that are metamorphosing into nightmarish demonic creatures across France.

The gameplay footage presented was all shot from a first-person perspective, which is an unusual yet refreshing approach for a Soulslike game. Given that One More Level, the talented creators behind “Ghostrunner 1” and “2”, are developing it, the choice of perspective aligns perfectly with their skill set.

The main character’s hand seemed reminiscent of BioShock, glowing as though imbued with magical abilities that allowed him to dual-wield weapons. With the upcoming delays for the next BioShock game and its spiritual successor Judas, Valor Mortis might serve as an exciting alternative, set to release in 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
