Summary

  • ONL split fans, but Gamescom’s show floor and other showcases delivered many playable games.
  • A wave of Soulslikes, indie to AAA, surfaced: Black Myth: Zhong Kui, Lords of the Fallen 2, Valor Mortis.
  • Many Soulslikes aim for 2026+ release windows; wishlist them on Steam and expect some long waits.

As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that the response to Gamescom’s Opening Night Live this year has been somewhat divided when compared to other major press events in 2025. However, the atmosphere on the show floor is simply electrifying! There are so many games available for hands-on experience. Moreover, even more exhilarating titles have been unveiled at other events such as the Future Games Show, adding fuel to the anticipation!

This week marks an important moment for the global gaming industry, with a diverse range of games generating buzz, whether players have had a chance to try them or not. Particularly, there have been new trailers and announcements for several upcoming Soulslike games. These eagerly anticipated titles are being developed by both big-name studios and independent teams. At Gamescom 2025, these latest Soulslikes were unveiled, offering gamers something exciting to anticipate in the years ahead, particularly 2026 and beyond. While details are scarce for now, these games certainly warrant adding them to your Steam Wishlist whenever possible.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui

The King Of Ghosts

At Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event finale, the title chosen to be showcased was “Black Myth: Zhong Kui”. The trailer was entirely computer-generated, displaying a demon riding on a massive tiger, who appeared to be our main character, Zhong Kui. In Chinese folklore, Zhong Kui hunted down evil spirits, which makes for an intriguing premise in video games. This game is being developed by Game Science, the same team behind “Black Myth: Wukong”.

The upcoming game Black Myth: Zhong Kui, like its predecessor Black Myth: Wukong, may deliver a Soulslike gaming experience. However, given the wait we’ve had for Zhong Kui, it might be some time before we get our hands on it. Interestingly, development on Black Myth: Wukong started even before its first trailer was released in 2020, hinting that Zhong Kui might still be a while away after its initial teaser. For now, it’s confirmed only for PC, but there’s a possibility it could also release on consoles.

Kaiden

Samurai Souls

  • Developer: 5th Column Studio
  • Publisher: 5th Column Studio
  • Planned Release: TBA

Kaiden is a relatively smaller game that didn’t make an appearance during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. It marks 5th Column Studio’s debut project, and based on the initial trailer, it appears to be shaping up quite nicely. The trailer showcases a samurai engaged in combat with a larger samurai, and concludes with a chilling sight of a spider-like monster. Judging from the trailer, fans can anticipate battling both regular samurais and demons in this forthcoming Soulslike game.

In the world of samurai-themed Soulslike games, Nioh is already well established, but the genre remains open to newcomers like Kaiden. Steam previews offer a glimpse into its gameplay, featuring snowy landscapes and stealth assassinations. Details about additional platforms and release date are yet to be revealed.

La Divina Commedia

Another Shot At Hell

At Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event, I was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of what seemed like a trailer for a game titled La Divina Commedia. Although it showcased some action, it felt more like a cinematic scene rather than actual gameplay. The protagonist, an unnamed knight, found himself confronting a peculiar, puppet-like figure amidst the dense woods. The setting was mysterious, with hints of folklore evident, despite its basis on the renowned epic poem. Alas, there’s not much information available yet, but the atmosphere certainly piqued my interest!

The creators of Jyamma Games are responsible for developing “Enotria: The Last Song,” a Soulslike game set in the realm of Italian folklore, which released in 2024 and offers an atmosphere that aligns with our expectations. On Steam, you’ll find features like sin alignment, weapon classes, and procedurally generated dungeons – elements not commonly found in other Soulslikes.

“The Divine Comedy” is an epic poem from the 1300s written by Dante Alighieri that recounts a man’s trip through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. However, it’s important to note that “La Divina Commedia” isn’t the first game inspired by this literary masterpiece, as Electronic Arts previously published “Dante’s Inferno” in 2010.

Lords Of The Fallen 2

The Second Sequel

The upcoming game, titled “Lords of the Fallen 2,” might be a bit perplexing to follow in terms of numbering, as it’s actually the third installment in the series. Originally released in 2014, “Lords of the Fallen” could be considered one of the first non-FromSoftware games to emulate the Soulslike genre. This initial game was revamped in 2023 under the same name, and now, this reboot is set to continue with a sequel. During Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event, a captivating CG trailer for “Lords of the Fallen 2” was unveiled, featuring an eloquent narrator discussing a war against gods.

The game is scheduled for a 2026 release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, it will be exclusively available on the Epic Games Store for PC users. Despite being close to launch, only a CG trailer has been shared so far. Fans of the prior two games might have an idea of what to anticipate, as there will likely be various classes, weapons, and powerful bosses to conquer.

Swords Of Legends

A Long-Running Series Comes To North America

The game titled “Swords of Legends” is another upcoming title that follows the Soulslike genre, rooted in Chinese mythology, similar to “Black Myth: Zhong Kui“. It’s important to note that this game belongs to a massive franchise, Gujian, which has been exclusive to China up until now. However, with its global release, players should find it straightforward to understand the narrative as they embark on a mission as a warrior, tasked with eliminating demons in ancient China. In essence, it’s about vanquishing demons in China’s storied past.

The brief glimpse revealed an intriguing scene of a headless demon battling amidst thick bamboo forests, accompanied by a blazing dragon. According to the game’s descriptions, players will have the ability to seize souls from defeated foes and later utilize them for combat. This may resemble either a Pokemon-like game or Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, both of which seem enticing. Unfortunately, there is little information available about Swords of Legends, such as a release date or supported platforms beyond PC. However, the Opening Night Live trailer at Gamescom did provide some gameplay footage.

Valor Mortis

Face Napoleon In A Soulslike

At Gamescom’s Opening Night Live pre-show, “Valor Mortis” made an appearance. Some believe this event showcased a stronger lineup of game trailers compared to the main event. This game stands out among other Soulslike titles at the expo due to its distinct perspective and theme. The players take on the role of a character who once served in Napoleon’s army, now tasked with hunting down former soldiers transformed into demonic beasts throughout France. Notably, all the gameplay clips were presented in first-person view, which is unusual for Soulslike games, but given that One More Level, creators of “Ghostrunner 1” and “2”, are developing it, this perspective aligns with their expertise.

The protagonist seemed somewhat reminiscent of a character from BioShock, boasting a luminescent hand that hinted at potential supernatural abilities, capable of wielding two items simultaneously. Given the recent hurdles faced by the upcoming BioShock game and its spiritual successor Judas, Valor Mortis might serve as an exciting alternative. Expected to launch in 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
