In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, most Pokémon evolve simply by leveling up. However, many require more than just reaching a certain level to evolve. Some need special evolution stones, while others can only evolve when traded with another player. A few Pokémon even evolve based on how strong the bond is between them and their trainer.
Knowing how all the Pokémon evolve in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* will be a big help when trying to complete the Lumiose Pokedex, and you’ll need it – there are 230 Pokémon to discover! This guide covers all the Pokémon that evolve through trading, using evolution stones, or building friendship, and also details any specific time of day or move requirements for evolution.
All Pokemon that Evolve with Evolution Stones
Twenty Pokémon can be evolved using Evolution Stones. You can buy these stones at the Stone Emporium on Vernal Avenue, or find them hidden in red Poké Balls around Lumiose City – look on the streets and rooftops! Usually, evolving a Pokémon is as easy as using the stone on it, but in a couple of cases, the Pokémon’s gender also matters.

Pokemon that Evolve Through Trading
Ten Pokémon require trading to evolve, and five of those need a specific item held during the trade to trigger the evolution. You can trade with friends or use special codes in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* to trade with random players online. If trading online, double-check that both Pokémon – the one you’re trading away and the one you’re receiving – are holding the necessary item, if one is required.

Pokemon that Evolve Through Friendship
Eight Pokémon evolve based on how close you are to them. While older games required a lot of battling and keeping your Pokémon out of its Poké Ball to raise its happiness, *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* makes it much easier. You can quickly build friendship by taking your Pokémon to a café for a few drinks. This can trigger a special evolution in as little as two or three minutes, but it will cost a little over 1,000 Pokedollars.

Okay, so I learned the hard way that evolving Eevee can be tricky! If your Eevee knows any Fairy-type moves when it’s super happy (aka has high friendship), it *always* turns into Sylveon, no matter the time of day. That means if you’re hoping for Espeon or Umbreon, you *absolutely* need to make sure your Eevee doesn’t know any Fairy moves before you try to evolve it. Trust me on this one!
Other Special Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Besides those unique evolutions, five Pokémon need to reach a specific level *and* meet another requirement to evolve. This extra condition could depend on the time of day, the weather, or even the other Pokémon on your team. For example, to evolve Inkay into Malamar, you have to flip your Nintendo Switch upside down while playing in handheld mode to trigger the evolution.
