All the Concord Abilities That Have an Overwatch Equivalent

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must admit that it’s quite fascinating to witness the similarities between characters from Concord and Overwatch. It seems like the creators of Concord have taken inspiration from their favorite Overwatch characters, and I can’t help but appreciate the homage they’ve paid to the game.

Despite not being the initial hero shooter, Overwatch in 2016 significantly elevated the genre and has maintained its dominance since then. Although other hero shooters have tried to dethrone Overwatch, few have managed to surpass Blizzard’s groundbreaking game. However, it’s possible that 2024 could mark the end of Overwatch’s reign as king; yet, Concord might not be the challenger Sony is hoping for.

The game titled “Concord,” initially announced in May 2023, unveiled its first gameplay earlier this year. However, the response was lukewarm. While its Guardians of the Galaxy-esque style attracted some fans, it alienated others. The brief demonstrations of gameplay didn’t seem to persuade fans that Concord could be the next Overwatch. This idea has been reinforced with the recent release of two Concord Betas, particularly since several Freegunner abilities in Concord appear strikingly similar to Overwatch’s own Hero abilities.

While Concord shares several capabilities with Overwatch, the majority of its characters exhibit at least a touch of distinctness through one or more unique attributes.

Every Concord Ability That Has an Overwatch Counterpart

Emari’s Shield Wall

Emari, equipped with a robust minigun, is known for her durable stature among the ranks of Concord. She offers teammates temporary armor enhancement and has the skill to erect a protective shield barrier akin to Reinhardt and Brigitte from Overwatch. This shield serves as a defensive fortress, allowing players to take cover behind it while engaging any adversaries in front.

Haymar’s Flashbang

Armed with a compact crossbow capable of launching potent bolts of fire, Haymar demands skill and a stable aim to be utilized efficiently. One of Haymar’s talents involves discharging a projectile that momentarily leaves opponents stunned by its impact. This talent shares some resemblance with Cassidy’s Flashbang, but the primary focus of his ability lies in restricting enemy movement rather than causing temporary visual impairment.

Duchess’ Wall

A seasoned participant within Concord, known as Duchess, possesses an extraordinary ability to swiftly erect a barrier similar to Mei’s icy wall from Overwatch. This barrier effectively halts both teammates and adversaries in their tracks, preventing further advancement.

Star Child’s Charge and Slam

Among Concord’s more robust champions, Star Child shares a resemblance in abilities with Overwatch 2’s Mauga. Known as “Rage Rush,” one of Star Child’s powers allows him to plow forward, pushing back any adversaries in his wake. This is much like Mauga’s Overrun move, where he too charges ahead and shoves opponents aside. Both characters conclude their charge with a slam ability that inflicts harm on surrounding enemies.

Lark’s Transplant Pod

Lark, resembling an insect, can place a Transfer Capsule at your feet using its Freegunner powers. By activating its ability again, Lark swiftly returns to this Transfer Capsule. This skill shares a likeness with Symmetra’s teleportation ability, but instead of setting up two teleporters in the environment, players must use this one-time capsule for instant travel.

Roka’s Jetpack

Among the game characters, Concord’s Roka appears to draw significant inspiration from Overwatch’s character, Pharah. They both possess a rocket launcher and a jetpack, while one of their special abilities enables them to accelerate and soar into the air for movement.

Lennox’s Throwing Knife

In comparison to Cassidy’s preference for Wild West-style revolvers, Lennox from Concord shares more of a resemblance with the Junker Queen in terms of one of his abilities. Lennox can hurl a throwing knife at an opponent that detonates on contact, whereas the Junker Queen’s throwing knife ability pulls the enemy towards her upon return.

Jabali’s Orbs

In a similar vein to how Concord functions as a support character, Jabali utilizes an orbed-based ability setup, which might be reminiscent of Zenyatta from Overwatch, albeit with some notable distinctions. Similarities lie in the healing orbs that adhere to allies and gradually restore their health over time for both characters; however, Jabali’s healing orb additionally restores the health of any allies within its vicinity. Unlike Zenyatta’s offensive orb, which attaches automatically to enemies and amplifies damage they receive, Jabali’s offensive orb requires manual activation to locate and harm opponents directly, rather than inflicting a debuff that increases their incoming harm.

Kyps’ Stealth and Surveillance Trap

A Freegunner named Kyps shares many characteristics with Sombra from Overwatch. Both characters possess a potent submachine gun and the ability to become invisible. In addition, Kyps has a Surveillance Trap that exposes nearby enemies, much like Hanzo’s Sonic Arrow.

Vale’s Leap and Trip Mine

A character named Vale, who excels in eliminating foes from afar, bears a striking similarity to Overwatch’s sniper, Widowmaker, in terms of his loadout. This becomes particularly evident when considering one of Vale’s skills, as it allows him to deploy a trap that harms unsuspecting adversaries, much like Widowmaker. However, Vale differs from Widowmaker by possessing an ability that resembles Baptiste’s Exo Boots passive, enabling him to make impressive vertical jumps.

1-Off’s Trash Bomb

1-Off from Concord stands out as the game’s most distinctive character, and one of his skills shares a resemblance with an ability found in Overwatch. Specifically, 1-Off can hurl a Bomb made of trash that bounces across the battlefield before detonating, similar to Bastion’s Tactical Grenade.

Daw’s Healing Pad and Dome Shield

In the game Overwatch, the abilities of character Daw mirror those of two characters: Soldier 76 and Winston. Daw’s Healing Pad works similarly to Soldier 76’s Biotic Field, healing allies within a surrounding area. Additionally, Daw’s Safety Dome resembles Winston’s Barrier Projector, creating a dome-shaped shield.

Bazz’s Melee Strike and Debuff

Similar to Roka, Concord’s Bazz shares striking resemblances with one Overwatch character specifically – Genji. Both characters are adept at throwing precise projectiles and have a move that propels them forward while delivering a melee attack. However, what sets Bazz apart is his Scourge Star projectile skill, which operates much like Zenyatta’s Orb of Discord, amplifying the damage inflicted upon the targeted enemy by all sources.
