All Unreleased Pokemon Seen in the Massive Leak Explained

As a lifelong Pokémon enthusiast who has spent countless hours collecting, training, and battling with these beloved creatures, I must say that this recent leak of scrapped Pokémon has been quite an intriguing revelation. It’s fascinating to see how these ideas were conceived, developed, and ultimately left behind for one reason or another.

A significant data breach at Game Freak has exposed a wealth of information about the Pokemon franchise, which is now being referred to as ‘Teraleak’. This leak has revealed various details, including abandoned designs for Pokemon creatures that were never released.

Information from major leaks in the Pokemon series has provided an abundant source of development details about past and future games, including previously unseen Pokemon, planned releases, prototypes, and abandoned character backgrounds. Among these discarded stories, a specific one about Typhlosion garnered significant attention – its content reminiscent of the popular creepypastas featuring Hypno or Drifloon. Recently, Game Freak has acknowledged the leaks, revealing that along with franchise data, approximately 2,000 employee-related information pieces were accidentally disclosed to the public. The company expressed regret for this oversight and assured that it would reach out to affected employees where possible.

Beyond the leak of upcoming and conceptual Pokemon, numerous abandoned Pokemon have also come to light. These unused creatures have been compiled by u/vagrantwade in the r/PokeLeaks Beta Leaks Megathread. In this post, you can find the ‘Gen 3 Prototypes’ spreadsheet document (originally assembled by The Cutting Room Floor), which displays all the Pokemon that were found beneath the surface. Most of these Pokemon fit into two main categories: Orange (those suspected to have been discarded before February 2002) and Pink (those suspected to have been scrapped after March 2002). However, it’s important to note that the specific dates are very uncertain, so these timeframes should be taken with a grain of salt.

Among the yet-to-be-revealed Pokémon uncovered in those leaks, Orange appears to be the most extensive category. Several of these creatures retain their original Japanese names, a trait that’s not common among most Pokémon. For instance, take Wailmer from these leaked data – it was once known as ‘Hoeruko’.

Just like past leaks of Pokémon, both minor and significant details have been shared freely. Among the listed Pokémon, there are developer notes that suggest why some didn’t make it to the final version. For instance, Bii, which was allegedly replaced by Wingull, has a note saying “I would change the colors,” correlating with the shift to Wingull, another flying Pokémon but with distinct coloring. Some Pokémon, like Sudowoodo and Keromeelo, were considered too similar to existing ones, while others, such as Rikugin, received mixed feedback, with the comment “I like the idea, but…

In simpler terms, the Pokemon called Monorabi, resembling a fire-version of Eevee, received one of the most straightforward and somewhat critical comments, stating it appears deformed. Similar to other Pokemon categorized as Orange, which were initially planned for discard before February 2002, Monorabi’s background information is quite sparse compared to those in the Pink category, where some Pokemon have brief backstories associated with them.

Warabitto, The Scrapped Starter Pokemon

In each generation, Starter Pokémon are renowned for their iconic status. However, some of these remarkable creatures can sometimes slip into obscurity. One such example is Warabitto, a rabbit-like Pokémon sporting a life vest, who was initially intended to be a Gen 3 starter Pokémon.

Fan analysis of the early concept art suggests that Warabitto was initially designed as the Water-type starter Pokemon. However, it was eventually replaced by Mudkip in the games. Despite this, there’s a significant number of fans who express interest in seeing Warabitto reintroduced. The adorable aquatic rabbit design is gaining popularity among fans, with many creating artwork featuring Warabitto.

Pink-Category Pokemon

  • Tottaa
  • Makkii
  • Biskyal
  • Kanbok

  • Kodomon
  • Mossmy
  • Shakokaku
  • Furapooto
  • Otoma
  • Puruun
  • Evolotto
  • Uulon
  • Archeon
  • Yuu-uu

Pink-type creatures advanced beyond other Pokemon in the recent leak, but they may never officially debut. However, their progress indicates that they possess intriguing backstories. For example, Archeon has several ‘Undecided’ notes about its characteristics, including its ability to transform its scales into wings and maintain its dinosaur-era appearance. Intriguingly, it is often referred to as a ‘living fossil’, with scales tough enough to slice through iron and feathers that are more akin to fur.

Uulon is a Pokemon with rich history, boasting many tales about its nomadic lifestyle. Likewise, Puruun shares this depth, offering plenty of insights into its dietary habits and fondness for flying. The case of Evolotto is unique; the lore surrounding the canceled Pokemon implies it could evolve into any other Pokemon, a trait similar to Ditto’s primary abilities. However, its ‘Unconfirmed’ section hints that it evolves through ‘transformation’ and into ‘numerous’ different Pokemon, adding complexity to its true essence.

Even though these discarded Pokemon from the Pink category come with comments, some of these comments are about Pokemon that resemble their counterparts too much. For example, Otoma’s comment suggests making it less like Poliwag. On a lighter note, Kodomon has a remark saying ‘It looks like Dragon Quest’, possibly referring to its cheerful face and large eyes that do share a resemblance with the well-known slimes from the Dragon Quest series.
