This latest incident is just one in a series of Pokemon TCG-related crimes, where valuable cards have been snatched from stores and private sellers alike. It’s a real blow to the community, and I hope this sets an example that such actions will not be tolerated.

As someone who has been collecting and reselling Pokemon TCG cards for over a decade, I can attest to the fact that this hobby isn’t for the faint of heart. I’ve spent countless hours and a significant amount of money on packs, hoping to strike it rich with a valuable card. However, more often than not, I’d end up with nothing but common cards that I’d have to sell at a loss just to break even.

In Oshawa, Canada, there’s been a recent discovery that a daring thief made off with around $5,000 worth of Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) cards from a local store. The audacious heist took place at around 2 pm on July 11, with the store bustling with customers. The thief seemed well-versed in their target items, as they made a beeline for three specific cards: Mario Pikachu Promo, Greninja EX, and Team Magma Groudon EX. A female employee attempted to apprehend the thief, but was met with violence when the thief struck her with a hard object. The employee required hospitalization as a result of the incident.

I was shocked when I heard that the thief had initially escaped the authorities’ grasp. But my surprise turned to dismay when just a day later, they announced they had arrested Mark Morgan, a 41-year-old with no fixed address, as the main suspect. The unfortunate news continued as it came to light that the three stolen cards have not been found yet and might have already been sold in the black market by the time Mark was apprehended.

Pokemon TCG Theft is a Big Problem

Several individuals take pleasure in accumulating and engaging with Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) cards. However, there’s been an unfortunate rise in criminal activities related to this game over the past few years. Consequently, major retailers have become more stringent, securing their Pokemon cards to prevent massive thefts. Regrettably, instances of theft have extended beyond the retail sphere. For instance, employees at the Van Gogh Museum were implicated in stealing rare Pikachu Van Gogh promo cards. Additionally, a GameStop employee and a prison guard are among those who have allegedly stolen Pokemon cards.

Because Pokemon cards don’t have unique serial numbers, it’s simple for thieves to swap and resell them, pocketing a quick profit. Sadly, unaware buyers might end up with a stolen card, leaving no trace of its previous ownership. This makes it challenging to identify and recover stolen cards, placing retailers and private collectors dealing in valuable Pokemon TCG cards under increased risk.
