Amazon Game Studios Head Christoph Hartmann Leaving Company

Amazon appears to be moving further away from the traditional gaming market. The latest sign is the departure of the leader of Amazon Game Studios.

Christoph Hartmann, a vice president at Amazon Games, is leaving the company after about eight years, according to a report by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg. His next destination and departure date from the Seattle-based company are currently unknown.

He’s also yet to make any public comment on the matter, as of writing.

Since 2018, under the direction of Mike Hartmann, Amazon Game Studios has released titles including Crucible, Lost Ark, New World, and King of Meat. Their most recent game, New World, is scheduled to shut down in late January 2027. Currently, the studio is working on two Tomb Raider games, as well as several other projects that haven’t been publicly revealed. However, due to recent changes within the studio, the future of these unannounced games is uncertain.

Schreier explained that Hartmann’s departure is happening as Amazon shifts its focus away from traditional PC and console games and towards its cloud gaming service, Luna.

Before working at Amazon, Hartmann dedicated 18 years to Take-Two Interactive. He was also a key part of launching 2K Games in the early 2000s, after Take-Two bought Visual Concepts.
