Amazon Still Isn’t Making Money From Twitch, Report Claims

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen the ebb and flow of gaming platforms, from their humble beginnings to their meteoric rise, and sometimes, their unfortunate decline. Twitch, once a shining beacon in the gaming world, now finds itself in a precarious position, teetering on the edge of profitability after more than a decade under Amazon‘s wing.

Twitch, the leading streaming platform globally with millions of users and an estimated yearly revenue of $2 billion, remains unprofitable for Amazon despite its acquisition in 2014 for approximately $1 billion. Even after over a decade, it has been disclosed that the tech giant Amazon continues to operate at a loss on Twitch.

Always Losing

As someone who has spent countless hours streaming games and interacting with the Twitch community, I was surprised to learn about Amazon’s financial struggles with the platform. With my own experience of using Twitch for entertainment and socializing, it’s hard to imagine that a company as large and successful as Amazon could be losing money on such a popular platform.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, it’s been suggested that there’s a decrease in new users joining Twitch, and the platform’s top spenders seem to be holding back financially. In recent times, Twitch has undergone numerous layoffs as Amazon tries to restructure due to financial difficulties affecting many industries. As reported by Dexerto, there are worries among insiders that more layoffs could be imminent.

It’s reported that individuals associated with Twitch mentioned some internal decisions, such as suspending or delaying various projects due to a lack of funding to support them.

As fierce competition mounts from platforms like YouTube and Kick, and ongoing criticisms from the community regarding changes on Twitch, the leading streaming platform might be approaching a critical juncture where it can’t turn back.
