It looks like Amazon Games may have canceled their planned Lord of the Rings online game. This comes from a recent post by someone who used to work at the company.
A former Amazon Games developer recently shared on LinkedIn that they were laid off, and specifically noted that the job cuts affected the team working on The Lord of the Rings online game. The original post has since been removed.
This morning, I was affected by layoffs at Amazon Games, along with many other talented people working on New World and our new Lord of the Rings game (which I think you would have really enjoyed). It’s difficult to see a great team impacted like this – I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the most skilled, creative, and kind developers I’ve ever known.
Although not officially confirmed, the recent announcement strongly implies the game has been cancelled. Sources speaking with TopMob share this belief, with one stating the game is “likely finished.” However, due to the value of the game’s intellectual property, they stopped short of confirming its complete cancellation.
Amazon Games and Embracer Group haven’t yet commented on the allegations made by a former employee, nor have they addressed information shared by sources close to the situation.
Even if Amazon stops making its online game, The Lord of the Rings will probably continue as a video game series. TopMob reports a new action game, played from a third-person perspective, is currently being developed with funding from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office.
