Summary
- FSR4 will be exclusive to AMD GPUs, starting with the RX 9070 Series.
- FSR4 will use AI and ML, moving away from hardware-based technology.
- Recent GPU buyers may miss out on FSR4 features unless backported or a mistake was made.
It seems AMD is following Nvidia’s strategy, as their upcoming FidelityFX Super Resolution version 4 (FSR4) will only be available on their latest line of graphics processors units (GPUs). Notably, this new feature might exclusively debut with the soon-to-be-unveiled RX 9070 Series.
Supporters of Team Red who had commended AMD for making its upscaling technology, FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution), accessible not just on new but also older graphics cards from various brands like Nvidia and Intel, may feel disappointed upon hearing that FSR4 will be exclusive to AMD GPUs, specifically the RX 9070 series, as of now.
FSR4 Is Coming, But Only for the RX 9070
According to slides officially presented by AMD (as reported by Videocardz), it was confirmed that FSR4 was set to be announced earlier than anticipated at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
As a dedicated fan, I find myself intrigued by AMD’s shift in direction with FSR4. Instead of relying heavily on traditional hardware technology, they’re embracing AI and machine learning solutions. However, given the noticeable differences between FSR and Nvidia’s DLSS – notably DLSS’s superior image quality, ray tracing capabilities, and performance enhancements – this move doesn’t come as a complete surprise. After all, it makes sense that such advanced technology would be exclusive to the newest AMD GPUs, particularly those based on RDNA4 and beyond.
While it’s true that the latest GPU buyers find themselves in an unusual situation, given they essentially paid the price of a DLSS 3-compatible card for an FSR3 one. Despite ongoing support, it’s clear they won’t get access to the latest features unless those are backported or there was an error in AMD’s presentation slides.
Information about the Nvidia RTX 5090 GPU and their CES keynote will be revealed later today, as previously scheduled. However, some details regarding the RTX 5090 have already been leaked prematurely due to its packaging being unveiled earlier than planned.
