American Primeval’s Cast Opens Up on Immersing into Frontier Life

As a history enthusiast with a soft spot for Westerns, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of American Primeval on Netflix next year. The series promises to delve deep into the harsh realities of 1800s America, a time and place I’ve always been fascinated by.

As a passionate enthusiast, I’m excited to share that I’ve been immersed in the gripping saga of American Primeval, a Netflix production set to premiere in the upcoming year. This captivating series takes us on an intimate journey through the American frontier of Utah during 1857, offering a detailed portrayal of life back then. The narrative is intricately woven around an eclectic group of characters – Mormons, Native Americans, and military personnel – each with their unique backgrounds, all finding themselves entangled in a brutal struggle for survival. The Western genre, divided into six compelling episodes, unfolds a self-contained tale that promises to be a must-watch for fans of historical drama.

Recently, Game Rant had a chat with two main stars of the series “American Primeval” – Taylor Kitsch as Isaac, and Betty Gilpin portraying Sara. They shared insights into how they aimed to fully embrace frontier living. Moreover, they delved into the harsh reality of 19th-century America, explaining its influence on their characters’ actions and driving forces.

How American Primeval’s Cast Embraced Frontier Life

Taylor Kitsch is primarily recognized by audiences for his starring role as John Carter or his appearance as Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Currently, he’s playing the lead character Isaac in American Primeval. He shared how he prepared for the role by fully absorbing the culture of frontier life to the extent possible.

I reside in Montana, offering a view of the majestic Bridger Mountains from my home. Discovering tales about the Bridger region and the genuine individuals who influenced Western history was truly captivating. The portrayal of him by Shea Whigham in this series is remarkable; he’s incredibly talented!

During my journey to Santa Fe, I passed through the Shoshone Reservation, Fort Bridger, and a burial site for some Native Americans in Wyoming. These historical sites, intertwined with the storyline of the show, were awe-inspiring and served as an extra boost of motivation. Each piece contributed to my growing appreciation for this role and my desire to embrace it wholeheartedly.

The World of American Primeval is Brutal

In this production, Betty Gilpin, famously known for her character Debbie Eagan on Netflix’s GLOW, portrays Sara. This character is deeply concerned with ensuring the safety of her son amidst numerous perils they face together. Gilpin shares that Sara encounters a world that is merciless and harsh, but paradoxically, there are aspects of freedom within it as well.

It seems likely that Sara was informed that her ultimate goal in life was to survive, as she was cast into a realm where civility and regulations were non-existent. Initially, this situation might have been overwhelmingly scary, yet there could have been an odd sense of liberation as well.

Recognizing the situation, it seems clear that I’m in grave danger here – either freezing or worse. Yet, this realization brings with it a sense that nobody is watching over me, which implies I can control my own destiny. There are more pressing matters at hand than my trivial concerns, such as my posture. For Sara, there appears to be a mix of fear and liberation in navigating this world.

As a gamer, I can tell you that the characters in this show feel authentic and well-rounded, thanks to the actors who clearly hold the source material in high regard. Director Peter Berg even brought on consultants to ensure historical accuracy, which seems to have been a smart move. Veteran actors like Shea Whigham, known for his work in franchises like Fast and Furious and Mission: Impossible, as well as Jai Courtney from Suicide Squad, are also part of the cast, along with Derek Hinkey and Saura Lightfoot-Leon.

American Primeval streams on Netflix on January 9, 2025.
