Spoilers for God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok.
The God of War series is currently shrouded in speculation, as Santa Monica Studio has not disclosed what future adventures Kratos might embark on. Various rumors have surfaced regarding the potential next installment of God of War, but none have been validated. Until Santa Monica Studio unveils their official plans, speculations about the franchise’s upcoming developments remain rampant.
A significant buzz currently surrounds the potential next installment of God of War, with whispers suggesting it could be a prequel. According to industry insider Tom Henderson, we might see a younger Kratos returning to Ancient Greece, but there’s also been much speculation that Egypt could serve as the game’s setting. At this point, it remains uncertain whether Egypt will feature in the God of War series, but if it does, an origin story set in this location seems plausible. An Egyptian-themed prequel for God of War would also introduce a fresh twist to the modern gameplay formula, since Kratos might not have his shield in this scenario.
If God of War’s Rumored Prequel Ventures Into Egypt, Kratos Will Be Left Without His Newest Method of Defense
Kratos’ Guardian Shield Has Played a Major Role in the Norse Saga
- The Guardian Shield was given to Kratos by his wife Faye as an anniversary gift.
A significant aspect of Kratos’ growth in the Norse tale revolves around his wife Faye’s demise, making his shield not merely a weapon but an essential part of his being. It’s challenging to envision a God of War series without this protective artifact by his side. Nevertheless, if Santa Monica Studio were to bring the God of War: Fallen God comic storyline to life as fans speculate, Kratos would lose this vital item altogether.
Playing this sequel would certainly change the gameplay significantly, since Kratos’ combat style might return to a form similar to the original trilogy. By doing so, it offers an opportunity to merge the contemporary style with the classic games, creating a unified and engaging gaming experience.
It’s worth mentioning that, while the Guardian Shield plays a significant role in the Norse Saga, it isn’t Kratos’ initial encounter with shields. In the game “God of War: Chains of Olympus,” the Sun Shield serves as a parrying tool. This shield makes a reappearance in “God of War III” under the name Helios Shield.
A Bridge Between the Old and the New
Though the Norse saga delivers action comparable to the epic battles in Ancient Greece, it introduces an emotional depth that distinguishes it within the series. This evolution is compelling, yet I wonder how Santa Monica Studio might approach a new God of War installment that leans less on emotions and draws more inspiration from the original trilogy.
Instead of an Egyptian prequel, perhaps a prehistoric tale would work better. It’s true that Kratos was significantly different before he encountered Faye and had Atreus. A pre-Norse Kratos storyline might indeed be intriguing, as it could emphasize his personal transformation into a father even more vividly.
Kratos’ shield is more than just a tool; it has become an important piece of him.
Santa Monica Studio Continues to Keep God of War Under Wraps
Following the 20th anniversary of God of War, there’s been no word yet on when Santa Monica Studio might reveal the next installment. It could be a prequel, or it may address the unanswered questions from Ragnarok. All we can do is wait and see, but an Egyptian prequel seems to hold a lot of promise.
