Regrettably, despite the 20th anniversary of God of War and the 15th anniversary of God of War 3 earlier this year, we haven’t received any substantial updates or exciting announcements regarding the franchise’s future plans.

As a passionate gamer eagerly awaiting news from the creators, whispers and speculations persistently stoke my imagination about the potential paths for the upcoming God of War project. Will it feature Atreus embarking on a solo quest or perhaps a semi-sequel, or will it break new ground with something entirely fresh? A few tantalizing clues hint at a possible Egyptian setting for God of War, as hints and glimpses of related artifacts have surfaced in the past. If this turns out to be true, it might mean Kratos embarks on another journey alone. However, even if that’s the case, there remain several ways this adventure could feel less isolating.

Kratos’ Companions Through the Years

Previously, a more youthful and enraged Kratos, known for his destructive path through the realms alone, had some notable instances where he even resorted to extreme measures like ripping off Helios’ head as a makeshift lantern. This act was undoubtedly hostile, leading to Helios often ridiculing and deceiving Kratos. However, starting from the 2018 reboot and now in God of War Ragnarok, we see an older and more reserved Kratos forming bonds with a few trusted companions.

In a parallel to the story of Helios, Kratos and his son Atreus liberate Mimir from captivity by severing his head, but this was as per Mimir’s own wishes. Surprisingly, this act leads to a friendlier bond, allowing Mimir’s disembodied head to guide the pair through the Norse realms. Later on, they are accompanied by Tyr, Freya, Angrboda, Brok, and Sindri. The game God of War already has some elements in place for blending Egyptian mythology to potentially introduce new allies.

An Egyptian God of War Prequel Already Has An In to Give Kratos a New Ally or Two

2021 saw the arrival of the “God of War: Fallen God” comic spin-off, offering creative means for a game set within the same timeframe to introduce potential new allies. While in self-imposed exile in Egypt, Kratos encounters an elderly scribe alongside an ibis and a baboon – both manifestations of the Egyptian deity Thot. These characters might be comparable to Mimir in a future game, offering insights on the geography and mythology of their realm to Kratos (and therefore players). By sharing important information naturally within stories and legends related to the region, they serve as unofficial guides or narrators, shedding light on the context through their narratives.

In an imagined scenario, a God of War storyline set in ancient Egypt could pit Kratos against its deities, offering opportunities for new companions to join him. Anubis, the historical guide to the Egyptian underworld, might serve as a helpful ally, guiding Kratos through challenges he encounters. This is merely one possibility for how Kratos could collaborate or battle with other characters in a hypothetical prequel, set in Egypt. The creators at Santa Monica Studio have ample space to redevelop and expand this concept within this framework.
