An Until Dawn 2 Would Face an Uphill Battle Compared to its Predecessor

An Until Dawn 2 Would Face an Uphill Battle Compared to its Predecessor

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can say that the remake of Until Dawn has brought back some nostalgic memories and left me intrigued about what might come next. The post-credit scenes have certainly added a new twist to the original narrative, which is making fans like myself eager for an Until Dawn 2.

The reboot of “Until Dawn” is here, bringing the cherished horror movie-style game back to life with a fresh coat of paint. In addition to the revamped game itself, this new rendition of “Until Dawn” includes two post-credit sequences that drastically alter the storyline from the original game. The revised post-credit segments end the tale on a suspenseful cliffhanger, sparking speculation about the possible creation of “Until Dawn 2”.

In the initial game version, it’s Josh and Sam who are central to the storyline. Sadly, Josh’s ending isn’t favorable, as he ultimately meets the same tragic end as his sister, transforming into a Wendigo. However, in this new rendition, a post-credit scene suggests that Josh might have escaped his grim fate, offering a glimmer of hope for his character. In addition, the remake hints at Sam living secluded and struggling with symptoms resembling PTSD many years later. The remake of Until Dawn was expected to alter certain aspects from the original, but the post-credit twists have proven to be the most significant changes overall. With whispers of an Until Dawn sequel in development, this poses a challenging scenario for the continuation of the story.

A Second Until Dawn Game May Have Trouble Feeling Special

Trying to Recapture the Uniqueness Of Its Predecessor

Back in 2015, when Until Dawn made its debut, it seemed incredibly innovative. It was almost like a unique blend of movie and video game, paying homage to the longstanding trope of teenage horror stories that have dominated pop culture for years. The idea of experiencing this subgenre within a video game was a refreshing departure from traditional horror games, and its success undeniably encouraged Supermassive Games to explore new possibilities. Until Dawn birthed several similar titles with interactive movie-style narratives, leading to the creation of what is now known as the Dark Pictures anthology. Given that this storytelling method isn’t exactly groundbreaking anymore, a follow-up to Until Dawn might find it challenging to deliver an exhilarating experience.

Supermassive Games That Followed Until Dawn’s Success

  • Man of Medan
  • Little Hope
  • House of Ashes
  • The Devil in Me
  • Switchback VR
  • The Quarry
  • Directive 8020 (scheduled to be released in 2025)

As a devoted fan, I’ve got to say that, apart from “The Quarry,” all the games mentioned here are part of the Dark Pictures anthology. The game that kicked it all off, “Until Dawn,” introduced an engaging and, although not perfect, horror series. However, after several successful installments, the excitement seems to have waned a bit, which might make an “Until Dawn” sequel miss out on the unique charm that the original offered. What made “Until Dawn” stand out was the thrilling suspense of knowing any character could meet their demise at any moment. Regrettably, none of its subsequent games have managed to capture the same level of tension. The Dark Pictures series is full of entertaining and often startling moments, but nothing has scaled the heights of “Until Dawn.” Consequently, a sequel might find itself in the same predicament.

The idea of a possible sequel to “Until Dawn 2” is quite unexpected. Although Supermassive Games’ horror tale hasn’t reached its first decade, it has gained a devoted following, earning the status of a cult classic. Ballistic Moon, the developers behind the remake, have already introduced significant modifications such as altering the camera angle and lighting, but the open-ended finale has left many players in a state of surprise.

If Until Dawn 2 Happens, It Can Hopefully Stick the Landing

Two unresolved conclusions in the story hint at a possibility that Hayden Panettiere and Rami Malek could reappear as Sam and Josh in future installments of Until Dawn. The direction for a potential sequel’s plot is uncertain, considering the numerous ways the story can unfold based on the different outcomes in Until Dawn (which has 256 unique endings). A follow-up may face challenging decisions regarding which deaths are considered valid.

If a second instalment of “Until Dawn” is announced, it could potentially deliver on the ambitious landing the Dark Pictures series has strived for. While another game isn’t essential, it promises to be captivating nonetheless.
