For a while, the expectation was that Sony would release the PlayStation 6 in 2027, and several sources indicated that timeframe. There were also rumors of a new handheld device coming out around the same time. However, recent challenges in the gaming industry have created some doubt, and new reports suggest the PS6 might not be available until later than expected.

Analyst Believes Sony Has Pushed Back PlayStation 6’s Release Date

According to a new report by MST Financial analyst David Gibson, the PlayStation 6 might be delayed beyond its previously expected release timeframe. While a 2027 launch had been rumored, Gibson suggests this is now unlikely. This assessment comes after Sony’s lead console architect, Mark Cerny, indicated a release within a few years, potentially in 2027 or 2028. If development has faced setbacks, the PS6 could now arrive no earlier than 2029, though Sony hasn’t provided a firm date.

During a recent interview, PlayStation’s Mark Cerny hinted at the PS6’s release, but also mentioned the underlying technology is still being developed. This development time is likely contributing to skepticism from analysts like Michael Pachter, who doubt a 2027 or 2028 launch. The current shortage of RAM may also be a factor. Reports from late last year suggested both Xbox and Sony were considering delaying their next consoles due to the memory shortage, hoping to avoid increased costs and production issues. It’s possible Sony chose to delay the PS6 rather than pass the high cost of RAM onto consumers.
