Nintendo is planning a significant update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, including a free upgrade when the Switch 2 launches and fresh content for the game. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a huge hit when it released in March 2020, quickly becoming popular with gamers everywhere. A large free update (patch 2.0) was released in November 2021, alongside the Happy Home Paradise downloadable content. Since then, Nintendo has released smaller updates to fix bugs and improve how the game plays.
You can finish the main story in Animal Crossing: New Horizons by watching the credits, but the game is designed to be played for a long time afterward. Players can continue expanding their museum, becoming best friends with their villagers, exploring the Happy Home Paradise expansion, and customizing their island however they like. I’m so excited! It’s been four years since the last big update, but Nintendo just announced a huge one for Animal Crossing: New Horizons! They dropped a trailer showing off what’s coming with update 3.0 and a new version for the Switch 2, both launching on January 15, 2026. The Switch 2 version will cost $4.99 to upgrade to, but the big update itself – version 3.0 – is totally free for anyone with a Switch or the new Switch 2. I can’t wait to see all the new features!

You can get Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the new Switch for $64.99. If you already have the game on the original Switch, you can just buy an upgrade instead. This new version of New Horizons will look better with improved graphics and higher resolution, and it will work with the new Switch’s mouse controls. It also adds a megaphone so you can call your villagers, and lets more friends visit your island at the same time.
The new update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons (version 3.0) is packed with improvements and features! Players can now enjoy Kapp’n’s family hotel on their island, more storage, and the ability to craft multiple items at the same time. Resetti’s services have also been enhanced to make island cleanup easier. A new feature with Luna lets players design up to three custom islands freely, similar to Creative Mode in Minecraft. Finally, the update adds fun items and even villagers inspired by LEGO, Zelda, and Splatoon.
