Since “Animal Crossing: Wild World”, villager portraits have been part of the series, though a portrait of Nook was available in the original “Animal Crossing”. As the franchise has developed, so too have the villager portraits. In “New Horizons” and “New Leaf”, these portraits are special rewards for players who reach a high friendship level with certain villagers. The villagers themselves will give players their portrait in “New Horizons”, while in “New Leaf”, they’re randomly awarded after completing tasks.

Engaging in the pursuit of Villager Portraits within Animal Crossing undeniably brings enjoyment and enhances the game’s immersive atmosphere, symbolizing a strong bond between players and their villagers. Though these gifts are heartwarming, it seems more fitting for prizes at higher Friendship Levels to offer not only personalized and distinctive rewards but also practical benefits.

Villager Portraits Could Take Notes from Hello Kitty Island Adventure

In the new game, Hello Kitty Island Adventure, much like Animal Crossing, players can earn rewards as they build friendships with villagers by reaching higher friendship levels. Instead of getting villager portraits, players receive special Character Gift Boxes tailored to the theme of the gifting villager, and these boxes come in different sizes reflecting various gift levels. The largest, most rare box not only contains valuable crafting and dyeing items, but also a collector’s hat designed according to the villager who gave the box as a gift.

How Animal Crossing Could Implement Villager Gift Boxes

Incorporating Villager Portraits as a high Friendship Level reward for players in “Animal Crossing” is a viable option, similar to how collectible hats work in “Hello Kitty Island Adventure”. This modification would be advantageous for “Animal Crossing”, as the game already boasts an extensive cast of Villagers, each with their own dedicated fanbase. Instead of introducing a new item like collectible hats, reusing the existing Villager Portraits within themed boxes could save time and resources, allowing the development team to focus on other aspects of the expanded feature. The game already features Villager Portraits for each character, as well as some for the franchise’s other NPCs, making it easy to implement this change. This would not only provide a rewarding experience for players who have built strong relationships with their Villagers but also contribute to the overall charm and immersion of the “Animal Crossing” world.

Instead of customizing the Villager boxes for each specific villager, Animal Crossing could opt to theme these boxes based on different Villager personality types. The only unique item in each box would be the Villager Portrait, while the rest of the contents would vary. This approach would reduce the labor needed significantly since there would only be eight distinct boxes. However, each box should offer different rewards, such as a Jock-type box containing stones, or a Snooty-type box perhaps holding a pearl.
