Jujutsu Kaisen is a leading anime in the current wave of popular shonen series. Based on the manga by Gege Akutami, the anime is produced by MAPPA, known for its high-quality animation. Each season has been exceptionally well-received by viewers and critics alike.
Although Jujutsu Kaisen is fantastic, several other anime are just as good. These shows offer equally compelling stories and stunning animation. While many fans still love Jujutsu Kaisen the most, these alternatives are definitely strong contenders.
This post contains spoilers for several anime series.
6. One Piece
- Main Character: Monkey D. Luffy
- Genre: Shonen
One Piece is widely considered the greatest shonen anime currently being made. It started in 1999 and has aired over 1100 episodes. While that many episodes might seem daunting, those who have watched the whole series agree it’s an incredible show. The animation quality wasn’t always top-notch, especially in the beginning, but it significantly improved when the story reached the Wano Country arc.
One Piece centers around Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate determined to find the ultimate treasure left by the previous Pirate King. Throughout his journey, Luffy travels to different places and gathers a diverse crew of companions. The series is known for its large cast of characters, giving almost everyone a chance to shine and make an impact on viewers.
5. Solo Leveling
- Main Character: Sung Jinwoo
- Genre: Shonen
Solo Leveling follows Sung Jinwoo, who starts as the weakest type of Hunter. After a strange event, he gains the ability to become infinitely stronger with each enemy he defeats. In just two seasons, he rises from being a nobody to Korea’s most powerful Hunter.
Solo Leveling is packed with action, similar to Jujutsu Kaisen. However, unlike Jujutsu Kaisen where many characters have great fights, Solo Leveling focuses the best battles on its main character, Sung Jinwoo. The story is decent, though not particularly groundbreaking. What really makes Solo Leveling shine is its animation, which some might even say is better than Jujutsu Kaisen’s.
4. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
- Main Character: Frieren
- Genre: Shonen
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 1 was a huge hit with anime fans, currently ranking as the top-rated show on MyAnimeList. The upcoming second season is also highly anticipated, already holding the fourth-highest rating. Many people love Frieren because it beautifully balances a compelling story with exciting action.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End tells the story of Frieren, an elf mage who is trying to come to terms with past regrets. She didn’t fully appreciate the importance of friendship during a previous adventure. Unlike many, Frieren gets a second chance when she meets new companions who help her learn the true meaning of connection.
3. Hunter x Hunter
- Main Characters: Gon Freecs
- Genre: Shonen
Many fans consider the 2011 anime adaptation of Hunter x Hunter to be among the best ever made, largely due to its excellent pacing. Unlike some other action anime, which can feel slow and drawn-out, Hunter x Hunter keeps things moving. Each episode is engaging and avoids feeling repetitive or boring.
Hunter x Hunter follows Gon Freecss, a boy determined to find his father. This quest leads him into a perilous world filled with strong enemies, but he’s not on his own – Gon relies on his friends for support. While both shows are popular, Hunter x Hunter excels in crafting a compelling story and detailed world. Jujutsu Kaisen, however, generally features more dynamic and visually impressive fight scenes.
2. Naruto
- Main Character: Naruto Uzumaki
- Genre: Shonen
Along with popular series like One Piece and Bleach, Naruto is considered one of the most influential anime of all time. Despite finishing its run in 2017, it remains incredibly popular worldwide and consistently ranks among the most-watched shows on Netflix, proving that well-made anime can continue to attract viewers for years to come.
This is the story of Naruto Uzumaki, a ninja who faces rejection and isolation. Even though people dislike him, Naruto perseveres and becomes incredibly powerful. Ultimately, he saves the world multiple times and earns the title of hero.
1. Demon Slayer
- Main Character: Kamado Tanjiro
- Genre: Shonen
Honestly, if there’s one shonen anime giving Jujutsu Kaisen a run for its money right now, it’s Demon Slayer. When the first season dropped, it completely blew everyone away! The animation was just on another level – I’d never seen anything like it. Ufotable really went all out, and it totally paid off. Demon Slayer became a massive hit, and you could see it in how well the manga started selling too!
Demon Slayer tells the story of Tanjiro, whose life is shattered when a demon attacks his family. While most of his family is killed, his sister, Nezuko, survives—but she’s turned into a demon herself. This motivates Tanjiro to embark on a quest to find a way to restore her humanity.
