Anno 117 Pax Romana Beginner Tips

Anno 117: Pax Romana is generally easy to pick up and play. But, figuring out the best way to do things often takes practice, so here are some helpful tips for those just starting out.

Build Two Woodcutters And Two Sawmills

When you start the game, focus on building Woodcutters and Sawmills to produce Timber. Although the tutorial only asks for one of each, building two right away is a good idea. This ensures you’ll always have enough Timber and can clear forests safely, knowing your wood needs are covered. Just be sure to leave some forest standing for Charcoal production later on.

Each building in the game takes time to complete. For example, both the Woodcutter and the Sawmill take 30 seconds to build, meaning one Woodcutter can keep up with the needs of one Sawmill. But more complex buildings, such as the Bakery, take a different amount of time to process.

Wheat Farms and Bakeries take a full minute to process items, but the Flour Mill only takes 30 seconds. To get the most out of your production, it’s best to have two Wheat Farms and two Bakeries for every Flour Mill. However, if you don’t have a lot of Tier 2 citizens (Plebeians or Mercators), having two Bakeries might be unnecessary.

Change The Speed Of The Game

As a big fan of Anno 117: Pax Romana, I’m really glad they included a speed control! It’s a game-changer, honestly. Sometimes watching everything happen in real-time can get a little slow, like when you’re waiting for a ship to travel. But with the faster speeds, things move at a much better pace – ships sail quickly and smoothly, and you don’t have to wait forever for resources to become available. It makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable!

Players can pause the game at any time, letting them build and manage their city without worrying about things like riots or fires.

Don’t Rush The Campaign

The story mode in Anno 117: Pax Romana gradually teaches players how the game works. Importantly, there’s no time pressure. Even during key events, like when Calidus is banishing the governor, players can remain in Italy for as long as needed to build up their wealth before moving to Albion.

Some occurrences come with a timer, like certain demands.

Keep An Eye On Negative Attributes

Initially, your city will be relatively stable. However, as you develop and improve your City Status in Anno 117: Pax Romana, problems will start to appear. For example, if citizen Health drops, disease can spread. Low Happiness might lead to unrest, and poor Fire Safety increases the risk of fires breaking out.

To improve these qualities, construct City Watch buildings like Vigiles, Medici, and Custodes. Also, place buildings like the Bakery away from tightly packed areas, as they pose a fire hazard.

Check The Statistics

You can open the Statistics view by tapping the governor’s portrait at the top of the screen. This helps you quickly see which buildings are overproducing and which need to produce more.

In the image, the city is making 2 Sardines but using less than that. Right now, there are enough Sardines being produced, but as the city grows and more workers arrive, players might need to construct additional fishing huts to keep up with demand.

Roads Between Buildings

You can build as many structures as you like right next to each other in the game, but keep in mind that how far apart they are is sometimes determined by the roads connecting them.

In the image, roads divide the Houses, with the Sanctuary positioned to influence each one.

If the roads connecting homes are removed, reaching the Sanctuary becomes much more difficult, forcing citizens to take a long way around. This distance weakens the Sanctuary’s impact, leaving some homes outside of its effective range.

Building buffs in Anno 117: Pax Romana are only applicable if the building is active.

Don’t Stress About Maximum Productions

Okay, so some buildings work best when they’re surrounded by certain things. Like, my Woodcutter needs about 80 forests nearby to run at full power. But honestly, if it’s at 95% or even 98% production, it’s not a big deal – it doesn’t really slow things down much. I don’t stress about getting exactly 80 forests; close enough is good enough!

If a building isn’t performing well, or if it’s overproducing, you can easily relocate or shut it down. Turning buildings off is particularly helpful when your storage is full, as it lowers maintenance costs in Anno 117: Pax Romana.

Build Field In Awkward Edges

The islands in Anno 117: Pax Romana don’t have neat, square shapes. They often feature uneven edges where you can’t construct buildings. A smart way to use these awkward borders is to create fields. Fields need plenty of room to grow crops, but cleverly, each one only takes up a single grid space, giving you flexibility in placement.

When building in Anno 117: Pax Romana, learning the keyboard shortcuts will speed things up. You can also build multiple structures quickly by holding down the build button. To move or copy a group of buildings, simply hold down the button and select the area you want to affect.

Settle On New Islands

In Anno 117: Pax Romana, each island has different levels of natural resources. If you need something your current island doesn’t produce, you’ll have to trade for it or get it from another island you control. That’s why expanding to and settling new islands is an important part of the game.

Settling on another island is locked by a quest in the campaign.

Unlock Research And Deity ASAP

Research can be time-consuming in Anno 117: Pax Romana, so players should build research facilities like the Grammaticus as soon as they can. This will help them stay ahead in technological advancements.

In Anno 117: Pax Romana, the gods can provide helpful bonuses, so buildings like the Fanum or Sanctuary become important to build quickly.
