As a gamer who vividly remembers the thrill of battling it out on the Sega Genesis with Eternal Champions, this news has sent me back to my childhood in a heartbeat! After years of waiting and hoping for a comeback, I can hardly contain my excitement as the classic title finally gets the silver screen treatment.

After several successful movie adaptations of video games, the well-known gaming company Sega has found a writer for a film based on their classic Genesis game, Eternal Champions. This is the first significant progress in the franchise in more than ten years, during which time it has been largely inactive.

The game “Eternal Champions” was first introduced in late 1993 by Sega, a period when Sega sought to establish their own prominent fighting series after the massive popularity of Capcom’s “Street Fighter” and Midway’s “Mortal Kombat.” Despite generating a sequel and two spin-offs by 1996, the series was eventually shelved in favor of Sega promoting “Virtua Fighter” as their main fighting franchise. The initial buzz around “Eternal Champions” gradually faded away, with only occasional releases such as ports on Virtual Console and Steam in 2008 and 2010 respectively, until recent years when video game adaptations gained traction in Hollywood.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Derek Connolly has been selected to write the script for an upcoming live-action Eternal Champions movie, produced by Skydance. Known for his work on video game adaptations like Detective Pikachu and the forthcoming Metal Gear Solid and Legend of Zelda films, Connolly has also penned Safety Not Guaranteed – a critically acclaimed debut screenplay – as well as several major franchise movies including Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Toru Nakahara, who managed the Sonic the Hedgehog film trilogy, will take on a producer role for this project.

The plot of the original game revolves around distinguished combatants, drawn from different eras – past, present, and future – by a mysterious figure called the Eternal Champion. This character organizes a competition where these warriors battle against each other to decide who will bring balance back to the world. Those who lose are returned to their original time, just before they would have faced certain death.

As a passionate gamer, it’s exciting to see how the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise has sparked a wave of adaptations for other iconic titles from Sega. The upcoming Yakuza: Like a Dragon television series on Prime Video is just one example, set to debut later this year. If Sonic’s triumph can awaken Eternal Champions from its dormant state, it would undoubtedly be a triumph for fans of this classic game series. With the buzz surrounding this high-profile development echoing throughout the film industry, let’s hope Sega takes note and finally delivers a new installment in the Eternal Champions series that has been long overdue.
