As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt and a soft spot for quirky, entertaining titles, I can’t help but feel excited about PlaySide Studios’ upcoming release, Dumb Ways to Die: Free for All. Having grown up playing the original Dumb Ways to Die game on various platforms, I’ve always found the morbidly amusing concept of cartoon deaths and catchy tunes irresistible.
PlaySide Studios unveiled their newest venture titled “Dumb Ways to Die: Open for Everyone“. Different from their past releases, this game boasts a travel theme and offers an unique twist – it will only be available on the Meta Quest platform.
Back in late 2012, a safety video for Melbourne’s subway system titled “Dumb Ways to Die” became incredibly popular. This three-minute clip, now viewed over 315 million times as of September 2024, features cartoon deaths and catchy music. The success led to an expansive media franchise. In October 2021, Metro Trains Melbourne passed the intellectual property (IP) ownership to PlaySide Studios, a game developer who were already producing “Dumb Ways to Die” games.
New Dumb Ways to Die Game Coming in November 2024
The company based in Melbourne has unveiled its latest venture, titled “Dumb Ways to Die: Open to All“. This game will be accessible only on Meta Quest virtual reality headsets, signifying the series’ initial step into the realm of virtual reality. PlaySide characterizes it as a set of travel-themed mini-games suitable for one to six participants. Players can earn coins by completing these mini-games, which they can then use to modify their Bean characters’ appearances. The game is slated for release on November 7, 2024, and interested players can add it to their wishlist on the Meta Quest Store.
Dumb Ways to Die: Free for All Isn’t Actually Free
Despite the misleading title, “Dumb Ways to Die: Free for All” is not free to play. Instead, it will cost $19.99, which is a standard price for premium Meta Quest games that often sell for as much as $39.99 today. However, you’ll still get good value for your money, as the initial release of the game comes with 50 mini-games. Furthermore, PlaySide has announced plans to release two free DLCs in December and January, each containing an additional 25 mini-games. As of now, it’s unclear if there are any further post-launch content plans for this upcoming game.
Back in early 2024, just a few months after the release of “Dumb Ways to Die”, I found myself excited about another game from the same franchise: “Dumb Ways to Survive”. This time around, it was a Netflix Games exclusive. Just like its title suggests, it’s all about surviving in a crazy world, much like playing “Don’t Starve”.
While it’s improbable that the game “Free for All” will be playable on non-VR systems due to its virtual reality nature, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will remain exclusive to the Meta Quest ecosystem forever. As for the new “Dumb Ways to Die” game, PlaySide has not provided any indication yet that it is exclusively available on Meta Quest for a limited time.
