Anthony Taormina’s Favorite Things of 2024 (Video Games, Movies, TV, and More)

As a seasoned connoisseur of all things entertainment, technology, and toys, I can confidently say that 2024 has been a year of unparalleled joy and nostalgia for this old soul. From the moment I laid my eyes on the Mattel Street Sharks figures, I was transported back to my youth, relishing in the warmth of memories long past. But it wasn’t just the revival of my childhood favorites that made 2024 special; it was also the discovery of new gems, like the LEGO Legend of Zelda Deku Tree set and the Elden Ring Collector’s Edition, that expanded my horizons and filled me with a sense of wonder.

2024 presented a year filled with speculation and ambiguity. The anticipated games garnering attention were not clearly defined, major films were slow to make their mark until mid-summer, and there was an ongoing question about Nintendo’s announcement of the Switch 2. Despite Nintendo’s attempts to clarify matters, details regarding the Nintendo Switch successor have emerged, but it’s for the following year, 2025.

Over the past year, it’s been an exhilarating journey filled with captivating media to delve into, tech innovations to explore, and surprises at every turn. As a dedicated follower keeping pace with the ever-evolving world of entertainment and technology, I’ve always found myself chasing the newest, latest, and finest. However, it’s often a futile pursuit. Yet, in 2024, there were countless moments that truly piqued my interest! Here are some of my top picks from 2024.

My Favorite Video Games of 2024

Year after year, my preferences in gaming evolve, yet there’s consistently a connection between games from my childhood and those offering intriguing combat that requires both engagement and skill. Fortunate to have the chance to try numerous titles across multiple genres, I often find myself drawn to games with captivating narratives, immersive open worlds, or striking visual aesthetics. A compelling tale can elevate a game significantly, but I frequently find myself hooked on a game that offers an engaging world design or visually appealing art style.

Although there are limited hours in a year, some games may not immediately captivate me, but I plan to revisit them. Yet, with 2025 approaching quickly, it’s unlikely that I will have the chance. However, I can still make progress on my backlog before the influx of new games for next year begins. Additionally, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is one of the best DLCs I’ve ever played, and its recognition at The Game Awards this year was well-deserved.

  • Astro Bot
  • Black Myth Wukong
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
  • Helldivers 2
  • The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
  • Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
  • Neva
  • Nine Sols

Black Myth: Wukong surprised me in a way I hadn’t anticipated. It began with an engaging hands-on preview during Summer Game Fest, and my fascination only grew as I got to experience the completed game. The visual appeal of the game is undeniable, but it was the diverse array of bosses and the engaging challenges they presented that held me captivated from start to finish.

2021 was an exceptional year for video gaming, offering a mix of delightful experiences such as Astro Bot and Echoes of Wisdom that kept my inner child alive, while games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Neva presented thought-provoking questions that lingered long after the end credits. It’s always challenging to choose among so many games I enjoyed for diverse reasons. If it weren’t for my friends joining me, I might not have developed such a strong affection for Helldivers 2.

My Favorite Movies of 2024

My deep-seated professional interest lies in video games, yet my personal fascination is with movies. I strive to catch a movie at least once every week, and I’m constantly seeking out fresh and exciting talents within the film industry. To be clear, I’m equally fond of blockbusters that are perfect for munching popcorn, as evidenced by my watchlist, but I eagerly anticipate both the upcoming Avengers movie and a new Paul Thomas Anderson project with equal enthusiasm.

  • Anora
  • The Brutalist
  • Conclave
  • Deadpool & Wolverine
  • Dune: Part 2
  • Heretic
  • It’s What’s Inside
  • Longlegs
  • The Substance
  • The Wild Robot

This year, both “Dune: Part 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” served up the thrill I was craving, each representing different aspects of an intriguing coin. Over time, I’ve grown to admire Sean Baker greatly, and his Palme D’or win for “Anora” filled me with joy. “The Brutalist” was a grand production that doesn’t come along often. The horror/suspense genre remains vibrant, as demonstrated by films such as “Heretic” and “It’s What’s Inside”.

This year, no movie managed to completely astound me, yet there were many that kept me thoroughly entertained and made me think deeply about some challenging questions. Similar to video games, I’m always on the lookout for a compelling narrative, but excellent cinematography and memorable performances are also key factors in keeping my interest.

My Favorite TV Shows of 2024

Despite my preference leaning towards video games and films, TV shows from this year really stood out. The television scene is evolving rapidly, matching movies in terms of longform storytelling and quality, thanks to actors who are becoming more discerning about the projects they take on. For instance, Colin Farrell has recognized the appeal of streaming platforms and starred in two exceptional series.

Due to brave performers such as him and some bold production companies, the variety and inclusiveness of television content has never been greater, offering us a wealth of options that cater to diverse tastes. Admittedly, there is an abundance of less substantial programming to wade through, yet on occasion, even the most unassuming shows can become your favorite viewing experience.

  • Agatha All Along
  • Disclaimer
  • Fallout
  • The Penguin
  • Shogun
  • Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
  • Three Body Problem
  • What We Do in the Shadows

A good hook goes a long way for me and my TV watching. If the first episode can grab you with a compelling or unique premise, then I’m willing to give it more of a chance than if a show has a slow start, but word of mouth says it improves over time. Oftentimes those simmering series turn out to be some of my favorites, but there are so many good shows everywhere you look and far too many streaming series to subscribe to.

I love that we got another stellar video game adaptation TV series in Fallout. It didn’t copy the formula that made The Last of Us a success, but embraced what makes the Bethesda games great without feeling generic or hokey. Shogun was packed with tremendous performances and took us to a time period and setting that video games use a lot, but is perfect for a TV series. 3 Body Problem was the show that had the most intriguing start, but I’m concerned that it might not have the legs to see that through. I hope so – because the concept is so bold.

My Favorite Tech of 2024

In my everyday life, I rely heavily on various electronic devices. If a device can help me perform tasks more efficiently, I’m open to trying it out, but I generally don’t dismiss anything outright. Sometimes, the most useful tools aren’t immediately apparent. For instance, I initially didn’t see the appeal of a portable PC gaming console, but now I find myself wanting one with me all the time. On other occasions, it’s about enhancing existing solutions. If a product outperforms its competitors or stands among the best I’ve ever used, it quickly becomes part of my regular rotation.

  • 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard
  • Anker MagGo Power Bank
  • Asus ROG Ally X PC Gaming Handheld
  • Audeze Maxwell Headset
  • Corsair Platform:6 Desk
  • LG UltraGear 32GS95UE-B Monitor
  • Remarkable 2 E-Ink Tablet
  • Scuf Envision Pro Controller
  • Shure SM7dB Microphone
  • SK Hynix Beetle X31 Portable SSD
  • Sony Bravia Theater U Sound System

I’m fortunate to have the chance to experiment with various technologies. Just as many others, I eagerly seek out my next must-have device, whether it’s a controller, mouse, keyboard, or headset. The Audeze Maxwell and Scuf have earned a spot among my favorites in their categories, and the ROG Ally X stands out as the top contender when considering performance versus battery life in the handheld category.

I make sure not to disregard smaller technological advantages, either. The Anker MagGo is an essential travel companion for me, especially on busy days like when we visit Disneyland. Additionally, some tech items on my 2025 list will enhance the content you see even more. Lastly, a big shout-out goes to the Corsair Platform:6 desk, which provides ample space for showcasing my collectibles and playthings.

My Favorite Collectibles and Toys of 2024

Talking about, I have a strong affection for accumulating items. Some might call it Peter Pan syndrome, but I find it challenging to let go of chances to bask in the memories of my past by showcasing top-notch toys that embody my cherished franchises from times gone by. With a vast array of media consumed during my upbringing, this list of “favorites” is as extensive as it is diverse. Interestingly, more and more businesses are recognizing the worth in reviving both well-known and lesser-known properties. It might drain my wallet, but it fills my heart with joy.

  • Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Collector’s Edition
  • Funko Fusion Pops
  • Hasbro Legends Giant Man
  • LEGO Avengers Tower
  • LEGO Legend of Zelda Deku Tree
  • Mattel Minecraft Exploding RC Creeper
  • Mattel Street Sharks Action Figures
  • Mondo Scott Pilgrim Super Vinyl
  • Proplica Legend of Zelda Master Sword

It’s been an incredible year for me with Mattel launching Street Sharks figures and LEGO introducing a Legend of Zelda set. Mondo (alongside their parent company Funko) never fail to impress, consistently unveiling an array of thrilling toys, collectibles, and memorabilia that it’s hard to keep pace with. I took a gamble on the Elden Ring Collector’s Edition, hoping Malenia would be an unforgettable boss, and I wasn’t disappointed, so I couldn’t resist adding Messmer to my collection.

Besides having a son, my perspectives have been influenced by his passions, leading me to explore new territories, such as Minecraft, over the past year. It’s been an enlightening journey, and at the same time, it’s been thrilling to see our shared interests grow without any coercion. Fatherhood has significantly transformed my life, but what I cherish most is the opportunity it provides me to rediscover my inner child and marvel at the world anew through his eyes.

In essence, my current experiences offer fresh perspectives, yielding insights I hadn’t considered earlier. My preferences, though personal, differ significantly from the past. This difference is unlikely to wane in 2025, and I am thrilled about discovering what will ignite my passion next. While Nintendo Switch 2, Grand Theft Auto 6, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming project top my eagerly awaited list, it’s the unknown video games, movies, TV shows, tech, and collectibles that pique my curiosity and drive me to explore new possibilities.
