ANTONBLAST review

As a seasoned gamer who grew up with the iconic Wario Land games on the Game Boy Color, it’s rare to find a modern platformer that captures that same level of creativity, charm, and unapologetic attitude like ANTONBLAST does. This game is not for the faint-hearted or those seeking an easy ride; Anton’s journey through hell to reclaim his stolen spirit collection is as challenging as it is exhilarating.

Due to an abundance of fantastic independent games, there’s no shortage of 2D platformers available currently. Many of these draw inspiration from some of Mario’s ideas and mechanics, but what about his wickedly mischievous counterpart? On earlier Nintendo handheld systems, the Wario Land video games were must-play platformers teeming with creative concepts. Since Nintendo seems to have neglected his solo outings a bit, it’s only right that indie developers step up and fill the void. ANTONBLAST is an awesome platformer in the vein of Wario, brimming with personality, but don’t expect it to coddle you.

Anton, our main character, deviates from typical vibrant platforming leads. His scowling expression and flushed complexion are more than understandable given that Satan has swiped his spirit collection. Driven by fury and a thirst for liquor, he plunges headlong into the underworld to retrieve what’s rightfully his, shattering countless crates in the process. Except for Satan’s somewhat suggestive remarks at the start of each stage, the narrative doesn’t interfere much with the action, which I personally prefer.

To start each level in ANTONBLAST, you’ll need to navigate towards the detonator located deep within, which requires moving through obstacles and enemies. However, it’s more straightforward to talk about it than to actually do it. The initial stages can be challenging because mastering Anton’s controls is tricky due to his extensive move set. He can chain charges at high speed, sliding or rolling are necessary for smaller passages, and using his hammer to bounce to higher ledges is crucial. I must admit that I was disoriented during the first few stages and had to replay them multiple times to get accustomed to everything. But once I got the hang of it, I found myself addicted.

Playing ANTONBLAST skillfully has its own unique rhythm that not many other games can emulate. You’ll move effortlessly through levels, dodging every danger without a single misstep, and the sensation is simply extraordinary. The stages are designed with various components such as cannons and jetpacks that swiftly propel you in different directions, and when these elements harmoniously collide in a dance of destruction, it’s nothing short of awe-inspiring.

In ANTONBLAST, it’s not just about non-stop high-speed action. The levels are carefully crafted, often resembling complex mazes where you need to detonate differently colored boxes (similar to the old school DOOM keycards) to progress, and they come with various other challenges to maneuver through as well.

ANTONBLAST review

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but sing praises for ANTONBLAST, and it’s the game’s diverse levels that elevate it from merely good to truly great. Beyond the initial phases, each stage offers something unexpected and thrilling – take, for instance, when Anton transforms into a pinball or encounters an entire level dedicated to shooting ranges. The challenges ahead require sharp aim and quick reflexes. And trust me, there are even more exhilarating stages that I won’t reveal, but believe me when I say they’re nothing short of breathtaking.

At the conclusion of each stage, reminiscent of the Wario Land series, you’ll find yourself racing against time to swiftly retrace your steps back to the start after triggering the detonator. This exhilarating dash never fails to entertain (a deliberate play on words), and familiarizing oneself with a level’s layout enhances the enjoyable, fast-paced experience even further. However, don’t let your guard down; an unexpected twist is often waiting for you during your return trip to keep things interesting.

In ANTONBLAST, the action stages are amazing, but what really gets my heart racing are the bosses. These shape-shifting, awe-inspiring, epic clashes reminded me of the boss battles in Final Fantasy XVI, and to defeat them you need a good dose of skill. The final boss in particular was an intense challenge that demanded I be a true master of Anton’s hammer. After successfully defeating it, I felt a rush of goose bumps and adrenaline!

ANTONBLAST review

The unique visuals present a gritty, pixel-style atmosphere reminiscent of rebellious ’90s video games. However, it’s the lively animation that truly breathes life into them. Characters like Anton and the rest of the crew stand out with their exaggerated facial expressions, while the energetic soundtrack enhances the overall experience even more.

If you’re willing to put in some patience and don’t shy away from a tough test, you’ll enjoy blasting your way through ANTONBLAST, a remarkable platformer that’s as challenging as it is fun. With a unique flow and an abundance of diversity unlike many others in its category, ANTONBLAST shines with its fast-paced action and love for explosions.
