The show “The Boys” – a gritty, witty take on superheroes – was created by Eric Kripke and premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2019. Based on a comic book written by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, this dark series has become one of the streaming platform’s biggest hits. It boasts impressive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with its fourth season earning a 92% score from critics, and has even given birth to spinoffs such as “Gen V”. Interestingly, despite its ongoing success, one of the main cast members is pleased that Season 5 will mark the end of the series.
Antony Starr, the actor behind Homelander in “The Boys,” recently discussed his upcoming action thriller film “G20” with Collider. When asked about Season 5 marking the end of “The Boys,” he expressed satisfaction with this decision. He elaborated that he finds it fitting for the series to conclude at this point.
It feels odd, yet I adore the series, but I dislike when things linger too long. So, I’m somewhat relieved it ends at five o’clock, and that’s all. I cherish the show and its characters, so this moment is both joyful and sad for me.
In a recent statement, Eric Kripke, the creator of Amazon Prime Video’s hit series The Boys, hinted at an unpredictable Season 5. Kripke expressed that the scripts for the upcoming season are following the distinctive style of the show itself, and he can’t foresee what will transpire next. This isn’t surprising given that Kripke has previously admitted to working with incomplete scripts, a practice they adopted during their first season amidst the MeToo movement and mid-season development. Since then, they have adapted an approach that allows for organic evolution of the scripts, welcoming changes based on current events, making it impossible for anyone to accurately predict the series’ future events as nothing has been definitively finalized yet.
It’s somewhat unexpected that Starr intends to conclude “The Boys,” given the widespread adoration for the series. If left to the audience, they’d undoubtedly ask for more seasons. Many shows have been tempted to prolong stories due to demand, but it often results in a decline as the plot becomes contrived and viewers lose interest. It seems Starr might be hinting at this dilemma – ending the show while fans continue to appreciate and back it.
As a passionate cinephile, I must confess that among the few popular series that resisted the urge to prolong their narrative, Arcane stands out as one of them. Debuting on Netflix in 2021, this animated gem born from League of Legends captured hearts worldwide. However, it drew its final curtain after only two seasons. Even Ella Purnell, who breathed life into the beloved and intricate character Jinx, was taken aback by its abrupt conclusion. Arcane’s showrunner, Christian Linke, revealed that they had a “precise tale to tell,” and they were determined to stick to their vision without overdoing it. Much like Starr, he wanted to leave us wanting more. The impending fifth and final season of The Boys promises to be a treat for fans, as it will bring together a major Supernatural reunion – a reason alone to patiently await its arrival.
The Boys Season 5 is expected to premiere in 2026.
