Apparently, Some Of Silksong’s Bosses Were Much More Difficult During The Playtesting Phase

Since its release in early September, Hollow Knight: Silksong has become a focal point for conversations about accessibility and difficulty. The game generated a lot of excitement, attracting many new players who weren’t prepared for its challenging gameplay, especially given that it’s a metroidvania developed by Team Cherry.

After player feedback, developers quickly released an update to make some of the game’s challenges a little easier. Players also stepped in, creating mods to help with particularly difficult parts and bosses.

Surprisingly, the final version of the game ended up being easier than initially planned. During testing, Silksong was even more challenging, but Team Cherry decided to make it more accessible for players.

Team Cherry’s Playtesters Faced A Much Tougher Silksong

In a recent interview on the Dan Allen Gaming Podcast, Matt Trobbiani – the voice actor for the popular character Trobbio – shared some behind-the-scenes details about how the game was made.

The most remarkable thing was that he also playtested Silksong and was among the very first to complete it, even unlocking the True Ending.

If you’ve defeated all the bosses, you should be grateful to the playtester! Most of his feedback involved making the bosses a bit easier. He explains that he primarily suggested adjustments that reduced their difficulty, saying, “It was much harder when I was testing the game!”

He didn’t say which bosses were difficult, but he suggested that some were given a slight warning period to help players react more easily.

Trobianni emphasized that Team Cherry really listened to playtester feedback. Each testing session felt unique, demonstrating the team’s dedication to finding a difficult but fair level of challenge.

Interestingly, the voice actor – who also helped test the game – revealed that the developers intended to release Silksong unexpectedly, as soon as it was finished. This confirms a popular theory among fans.

Trobbiani didn’t say why the plan was cancelled, but it fits with Team Cherry’s tendency to keep development and marketing subtle and understated.
