Embark Studios, the developer of ARC Raiders, is continuing its fight against cheaters. They’ve recently updated Steam Family Sharing to stop banned players from playing the game on different accounts through a family plan. While many ARC Raiders players feel the studio could do more to address the cheating problem, this change to Family Sharing is a positive move.
Despite its success – including winning Best Multiplayer Game at the 2025 Game Awards and selling over 12 million copies – the popular shooter ARC Raiders has been plagued by cheaters. As a live-service game with a large player base, it was inevitable that hackers would try to spoil the experience for legitimate players. After a surge in cheating over the Christmas holidays, Embark Studios announced plans in early January to combat the issue. They promised to update the game’s rules and improve cheat detection. Now, it seems they’ve implemented another change that players will appreciate.
ARC Raiders Cheaters Can No Longer Abuse Steam Family Sharing
Embark Studios recently announced changes to how Steam Family Sharing works with their game, ARC Raiders. Steam Family Sharing allows players to share games with family members linked to their accounts. However, Embark has stated that if any account within a Steam Family group is caught cheating in ARC Raiders, all accounts sharing that game will be banned. This new policy aims to deter cheating and ensure fair gameplay.
If the owner of an ARC Raiders license is banned, they won’t be able to share the game with others through Steam Family Sharing. Anyone currently playing through Family Sharing will need to be removed from the sharing group and buy their own copy to keep playing, according to Embark.
Currently, players who cheat in ARC Raiders don’t face immediate, permanent bans. A recent update introduced a three-strike system: first offense results in a 30-day suspension, the second a 60-day suspension, and only the third offense leads to a permanent ban. This approach has proven unpopular with many players, who feel it’s too forgiving and are urging the developers at Embark to ban cheaters immediately. As of now, Embark hasn’t responded to this criticism or indicated if they plan to change the system.
Cheating is harming the overall experience in ARC Raiders, but streamers and content creators are feeling the brunt of it. Popular streamer TheBurntPeanut recently considered quitting after repeatedly being targeted by cheaters during a live stream. Other creators and pro players, including Shroud, have criticized Embark’s handling of the issue, stating the developers seem unable to control cheating in their own game. In response, Embark has implemented a matchmaking delay feature designed to protect streamers from cheaters and ‘stream snipers’.

The recent updates to Steam Family Sharing are a positive move, and players are eager to see Embark continue to address cheating in ARC Raiders. The game receives weekly updates with improvements and bug fixes. This month, a significant ‘Shrouded Sky’ update is planned, adding a new map condition, a tougher enemy type, a new set of challenges, and other features. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, Embark expects to launch the update in February.
