One of the developers working on machine learning for ARC Raiders wants to include a feature similar to the iconic battle on Hoth from Star Wars. However, the game’s designers currently feel it doesn’t align with the game’s overall style. Although ARC Raiders is still relatively new, celebrating its six-month mark, the developers at Embark have already added a lot of content. With plans to support the game for ten years, they’re also considering adding some significant new features in the future.
Embark announced its plans for ARC Raiders earlier this year, outlining four major updates scheduled between January and April. The third update, Flashpoint, arrived at the end of March, introducing a dangerous new map condition, a frightening new ARC enemy type, two new weapons, and other improvements. Now, players are preparing for Riven Tides, the last confirmed update on the roadmap. This update will add a large, powerful new ARC enemy – likely comparable to the Queen or Matriarch – and a completely new map, the first since Stella Montis was released late last year.
ARC Raiders Devs Want to Add Star Wars-Inspired Machine Takedowns
Embark Studios’ ARC Raiders has quickly become a hit, and a big part of that success is the game’s challenging enemy force, the ARC. These enemies, like the Leaper and the powerful Matriarch, are tough opponents that even learn and adapt to different environments thanks to advanced technology. Because the game relies so much on realistic physics, Embark has a lot of room to add new features and improvements to the ARC, and some players are hoping for an addition inspired by the iconic Hoth battle from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
In a recent GamesRadar interview, Martin Singh-Blom, a lead researcher in machine learning, explained how new tools are allowing the development team to create previously impossible gameplay elements. Speaking at GDC, he shared his desire for more realistic physics in the game, stating, “We want things like ropes pulling on characters’ legs or wires tripping them—similar to the speeder bike chase on Hoth in Star Wars. Better rope physics would make that possible.”
According to Singh-Blom, the team is always working on new ideas, but designers feel some features just aren’t a good fit for ARC Raiders at the moment. The design team is prioritizing what’s needed right away, while the research team focuses on more experimental, cutting-edge technology. Singh-Blom also mentioned he’d like to revisit some previously cut ideas, especially adding shock absorption to the ARC robots’ legs. He explained that while this could create more realistic movement, it causes physics issues, making the robots unstable and difficult to animate convincingly. This became particularly relevant as ARC Raiders shifted its focus from a purely cooperative experience to one that blends cooperative and competitive gameplay.

The team behind ARC Raiders has exciting plans for the game’s future, but don’t expect complex, *Star Warsstyle battles with large machines anytime soon – creating that kind of realistic action takes a lot of development time. Fortunately, there’s plenty of new content on the way! Players recently got the big Flashpoint update, and the Riven Tides update is coming in just a few weeks. While the studio hasn’t revealed what’s next after April, the game is doing well, and Embark has committed to supporting it for the next decade, so more updates are definitely planned.
