ARC Raiders Director Comments on Potential Unrealistic Cosmetics and Skins

Players of the new game ARC Raiders won’t have to worry about silly or over-the-top character customizations. The game’s design director at Embark Studios has confirmed they plan to stick with the current look and feel. While cosmetic items are a hot topic in gaming, ARC Raiders is making it clear they’re prioritizing the game’s aesthetic. That said, players will still have options to personalize their experience and express themselves creatively.

Popular free-to-play games like Fortnite and The Finals rely on cosmetic items and small purchases to generate revenue, which is now standard for this type of game. However, full-priced games like Call of Duty have recently received criticism from players. Concerns aren’t just about the frequency of these purchases and bundles, but also the designs of the cosmetic items themselves. This led to significant community backlash against Call of Duty publisher Activision, ultimately causing them to cancel the controversial Carry Forward feature planned for Black Ops 7.

ARC Raiders Dev Shuts Down Potential Goofy Skins

Activision recently changed course on cosmetic items for Call of Duty, and this seems to have had a big impact on the gaming industry. Several other game developers are now promising their games won’t include outlandish or silly character skins. DICE, the team behind Battlefield 6, recently did this, and now Virgil Watkins, the design director for ARC Raiders, has told PCGamesN that their new game will stick to a consistent look. He assures players that any future cosmetic items will match the game’s style and fit the overall world and story.

According to director Helmi Watkins, ARC Raiders won’t feature outlandish or comical character skins – for example, they won’t create a Santa Claus outfit. However, Embark Studios does plan to offer cosmetic items that capture the spirit of holidays or themes, like a Santa Claus-inspired design, while remaining consistent with the game’s overall look and feel. Watkins assures players that despite this approach, Embark intends to provide ample customization options and allow players to express their individuality.

Embark’s new game, ARC Raiders, is already a hit! It quickly gained popularity, reaching over 264,000 players on Steam at the same time on its first day. Players seem to be enjoying it too, giving it a “very positive” rating. If Embark continues to add great content after launch, like they did with The Finals, ARC Raiders could become a favorite for fans of the extraction shooter genre.
