ARC Raiders Explains Their ‘Optional’ Progression Wipes

ARC Raiders is resetting player progress, similar to many other games. However, the way they’re doing it is unusual.

Embark Studios announced today that they’re calling their system of game resets “Expedition Projects.” These resets will help keep the game’s economy healthy and maintain fair player-versus-player combat, and players will be able to choose whether or not to participate.

Like we’ve done with other game features, we want to test our own approach before copying what other games do. While we might use traditional resets later on, if our new ‘Expeditions’ are successful, players won’t have to worry about being forced to reset their progress in ARC Raiders.

Expedition Projects are extended, multi-week challenges designed to give your account significant rewards. Once you finish an Expedition Project, your character’s progress will reset, but you’ll be able to keep any permanent upgrades you’ve earned.

The system resets every eight weeks, but you can only finish everything and trigger the reset during the final week. If you don’t reach that point, your progress carries over to the next cycle. You’ll keep your progress each time the cycle repeats until you’re able to complete the reset.

Once an Expedition Project is completed, players will reset – losing all progress made by their character, including levels, skills, items, workshop progress, and crafting abilities.

Players won’t lose their cosmetic items, awards, achievements, or rankings – anything they’ve earned or bought. These things will stay with them, giving them continued motivation to keep playing and achieving new goals.

Details about the rewards for Expedition Project are still being finalized, but the announcement gives a preview of what players can expect. These rewards could include cosmetic items, permanent account upgrades, and account-wide benefits. However, the developers have stated they won’t offer anything that would unbalance player-versus-player combat.

The developers are emphasizing fairness when it comes to rewards from completing a game reset. They state that resetting your progress shouldn’t give you any advantage in power or combat compared to players who haven’t reset.

Players React To ARC Raiders’ Progression Wipe System

Players on the ARC Raiders subreddit seem to like this new approach. One fan commented that they’re happy to see experimentation in games and is eager to try out the system, adding, “I’m in!”

One fan pointed out the system is similar to the prestige system in Call of Duty, which is a good comparison. According to the post, even players who appear weaker might not be easy to defeat, and the number of times a player successfully eliminates opponents could be shown on their profile as a way to show off their skill.

Players seem to like the new feature so far, though some have expressed concerns. You can try it out for yourself when the game is released on October 30th.
