Embark Studios’ new game, Arc Raiders, quickly became a hit, attracting over 100,000 players shortly after its launch on October 30th, and that number continues to grow. From the creators of the popular free-to-play shooter The Finals (released in 2023), Arc Raiders is a third-person multiplayer game where players compete against each other and work together against the environment, all set in a futuristic version of Earth.

A big part of what makes Arc Raiders appealing is the ability to play with friends, regardless of what gaming system they use. This extraction shooter challenges players to scavenge for items within a 30-minute timeframe, all while fighting off enemy robots and other players. If you’re defeated, you’ll lose most of your gear, so the aim is to successfully extract with valuable loot to sell, create new weapons, and improve your character. Players familiar with games like Escape from Tarkov will likely recognize the core gameplay loop.
Arc Raiders Hits Major Player Milestone Right Out of the Gate
I jumped into Arc Raiders when it launched at 2:30 AM PST on October 30th, and it was crazy busy! Within just half an hour, over 100,000 of us were playing at the same time. As of right now, we’re almost hitting 200,000 concurrent players according to SteamDB. Honestly, this wasn’t a huge surprise – the beta weekend in mid-October was packed too, with over 185,000 players diving in for some sci-fi shooting and loot grabbing.

It’s no surprise the game servers are struggling – many players are reporting trouble connecting and staying connected. Despite a recent beta test, it appears the developers, Embark Studios, weren’t fully ready for so many players wanting to play Arc Raiders. While frustrating for those experiencing connection issues, this high demand could actually be a positive sign for the game’s future.

Just because a game is incredibly popular when it launches doesn’t mean it will stay that way. Amazon’s New World had a huge initial player base, but after only four years, the developers announced they’re no longer adding new content. Many players are hoping Arc Raiders has more staying power, especially since Embark Studios is already working on two other games. The success of those future projects might depend on how well Arc Raiders performs in the long run.
