Arcane Season 2's High Song Count is About Storytelling

As a die-hard fan of both League of Legends and Netflix’s Arcane, I can wholeheartedly say that this show has been nothing short of a musical masterpiece. The way it brings our beloved Champions to life and weaves their complex stories is simply breathtaking. It’s like listening to the backstory of Caitlyn and Vi on a symphony of emotions, set against the pulsating rhythm of Zaun and Piltover’s tumultuous relationship.

In Netflix’s show “Arcane”, legendary champions from the popular game “League of Legends” are brought to reality. The series delves into the conflict between Piltover and Zaun, and shows how characters like Caitlyn and Vi evolve over time, becoming remarkably similar to their counterparts in “League”. “Arcane” has garnered acclaim for its emotional depth, which is often emphasized through music.

In a recent chat, Game Rant talked with Alexander Seaver – a well-known musician who oversaw the music for ‘Arcane’ Season 2 – about the tunes in the Netflix series that underscore significant narrative beats, as well as the significance of the show’s substantial song count in its second season.

Arcane’s Second Season Brought About Big Changes

Speaking about the triumph of Arcane’s first season, Seaver pointed out that persuading artists to collaborate was quite a hurdle because the TV series didn’t have an established presence yet. It was tough to convey the concept of integrating their songs with an animation that was still unidentified at the time. However, as we now know, the show and its music have been hailed as potential classics by critics.

Following their triumph, Seaver noted that instead of the challenges faced during Season 1, a stark contrast emerged. Various artists inquired about contributing to Season 2 and expressed eagerness to collaborate on Fortiche’s project for Arcane. This enthusiasm was beneficial for the musical aspects of Arcane between seasons, given the acclaim its narrative through music had received. However, it was crucial to ensure these musical moments stood out for their storytelling impact rather than simply adding more music. As Seaver clarified to Game Rant, the focus was on making these segments memorable from a storytelling perspective, not just incorporating additional music.

I’m eager to know people’s reactions to the show, as this season features twice as many songs compared to the first one. However, we ensured that the creation process remained identical to season 1, focusing on enhancing storytelling. Unlike some productions that highlight music as a promotional tool, every song in our show serves a purpose in the narrative. This approach is what our team, including Christian and Fortiche, prefers.

In the series Arcane, numerous songs were composed to align with the animations, enhancing the narrative through music instead of the show being created first. This approach required Seaver and other musicians to analyze the story’s development, even in its early stages, using it as inspiration for the tracks they produced, right down to the beats per minute.

In the creation of Arcane’s second season, it’s crucial to note that numerous songs within the series are tailored for the characters and their viewpoints. Unlike the first season, which primarily focused on Jinx’s mind, the second season allowed composer Seaver to delve deeper into Caitlyn’s character. These musical compositions and their integration into the animation are so significant that even last-minute adjustments were made before the season’s premiere. This intricate process, as Seaver explains, is both laborious and rewarding, requiring a dedicated team. Fortunately, Arcane boasts such a team, ensuring the quality of its music and storytelling.

In a world where countless obstacles could have derailed our success, some magical force has kept us going. I truly believe it’s the extraordinary people behind this project who make it all work. They embody an unparalleled team spirit, their camaraderie is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Each member contributes to a common goal with utmost respect and admiration for one another, fostering an environment where ideas flow freely and positively. It’s hard to express how much I appreciate the amazing family we’ve become in the process of working together.

For Seaver, among his numerous endeavors at Riot Games like “Legends Never Die” and “Phoenix,” the project Arcane stands out in a league of its own. Interestingly, he chose not to watch the final animation that he didn’t oversee personally but rather waited eagerly to witness the story unfold, just like he did during season 1. The captivating music and characters of Arcane have touched many hearts, not only within the team but also among fans, and Seaver hopes that the audience will continue to enjoy the rest of the musical adventure as it is progressively revealed throughout the month.
