Arcane Success Didn’t Translate to New League of Legends Players

Summary

  • Arcane’s success didn’t increase League of Legends revenue as expected.
  • Riot Games invested $250 million in Arcane, but it didn’t attract new players.
  • League of Legends didn’t see much benefit from the Arcane project, despite its popularity.

As a seasoned gamer who’s been playing League of Legends for years, I can’t help but feel a tad perplexed about the Arcane situation. While Arcane was undeniably an impressive piece of entertainment, it seems that Riot Games’ investment didn’t quite pay off in terms of new players flocking to LoL.

Despite Arcane’s massive success, it appears that League of Legends hasn’t seen enough financial gains from this positive reception. A well-known competitive game, League of Legends boasts a sizable active player community. Additionally, this Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) also encompasses an expansive universe with multiple releases beyond the main game.

One option for paraphrasing this text could be: “One of these is ‘Arcane,’ a Netflix show with two seasons – the initial one released in 2021, and the second premiered this year. The storyline is heavily influenced by the universe of the game, presenting the conflict between underworld Zaun and the upper-class Piltover, as well as the clashes between these two realms. The plot primarily revolves around characters like Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn, along with other champions from ‘League of Legends.’ This show has gained significant attention due to the appearance of these characters. However, it appears that ‘League of Legends’ may not have experienced as much benefit as expected from this project despite all the buzz surrounding it.

As an ardent fan, I recently came across a fascinating tidbit from Bloomberg – the production of the two Arcane seasons by Riot Games set them back a whopping $250 million. Surprisingly, this hefty investment didn’t seem to lure fresh players into League of Legends. Netflix shelled out $3 million for each episode aired, while Tencent Holdings Ltd, its owner, added another $3 million for the rights to broadcast it in China. Combined, these payments make up less than half the total expense.

Arcane Was a Hit, But Not for League of Legends

If the first season of Arcane didn’t have content that was connected to it, the development team had extra time to work on Season 2. This allowed League of Legends to receive updates like new skins, such as the Arcane Fractured Jinx, which caused controversy due to its high price of $250. Additionally, ARAM, one of the MOBA’s most popular modes, received a themed update, and Viktor got a visual rework inspired by his appearance in the Netflix show. The game also announced the arrival of two new champions, Ambessa and Mel. While the matriarch of the Medarda family was introduced on November 6, it is expected that Mel will make her debut in February 2025.

Following the conclusion of Jinx, Vi, and Caitlyn’s adventure, the show “Arcane” is gearing up for what lies ahead. As revealed by one of the showrunners, Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia are set to be the next regions featured. Simultaneously, the latest update in “League of Legends” was version 14.24, released on December 10, which includes adjustments for numerous champions and additional “Arcane” content.
