In the initial collection for Disney Lorcana, known as Archazia’s Island, there will be a total of 204 cards. These cards mark the introduction of dual-Ink cards, a first in Lorcana. Particularly, the Amethyst Legendaries on Archazia’s Island seem to be less likely to make an impact in competitive play. The Queen – Jealous Beauty could potentially find its place in mill decks, but it’s unlikely to become a mainstay in the competitive Amethyst deck scene.

In a shift that adds an intriguing twist, the enchantment known as Lorcana now has modified rules, upping the lore requirement for opponents aiming to win from 20 to 25. Yet, an important note: any action banishing the character or overcoming Donald Duck in a contest will likewise eliminate the effect on the field. It also possesses the Fight Like A Bear ability, which protects the owner’s characters with seven or more Strength from taking damage. While this effect could prove beneficial in certain situations, its high cost for relatively modest stats and the scarcity of game-winning characters with high Strength means it may not see much play on the battlefield.

As a fan, I find that the tale of Ratigan – Nefarious Criminal intertwines fascinatingly with Ruby’s emphasis on actions, particularly within Ruby/Emerald decks. The intrigue lies in the fact that Ratigan, when placed on the battlefield, grants one lore each time an action is played. This can be quite potent, especially when Maui – Half-Shark is also present.

However, for a card that costs 4 resources and boasts only 3 Strength and 3 Willpower, its competitive value might not be as bright in the high-stakes arena.

In the game of Lorcana, Sapphire is a potent color due to its ability to utilize numerous cards that allow players to ink multiple cards during their turns instead of just one. This feature, known as “ramping,” is evident in cards like Tipo – Growing Son from Lorcana’s Shimmering Skies, which has become a common inclusion in Sapphire decks. Another key aspect of this color is the emphasis on Items, and set 7 does not fail to deliver. Scrooge McDuck – Resourceful Miser is an excellent four-drop for Sapphire, boasting 4 Strength and Willpower even when questing for one lore. However, it can also be played for free by exerting four items. Furthermore, when Scrooge enters the battlefield, players can peek at the first four cards of their decks, reveal an Item, and add it to their hand.

Similarly, the card Tamatoa – Happy as a Clam is another excellent Sapphire card, reminiscent of its initial counterpart, Tamatoa – So Shiny! from Lorcana’s debut set. This revised version of Tamatoa boasts 4 Strength and 5 Willpower and requires two quests for activation, which is reasonable for a cost of 6 Ink. However, it also offers two impressive abilities. The Coolest Collection ability lets players retrieve up to two Item cards from their discard pile and place them back into their hand when playing Tamatoa, while I’m Beautiful, Baby! allows players to place an item into play for free whenever Tamatoa is questing. Both these Legendary cards are highly effective and are expected to be used in competitive gameplay.

In the game of Lorcana, steel is a color that often performs well, as its combinations are generally strong or even exceptional, except for the combination of Ruby and Steel. However, it’s possible that this deck could find a niche in set 7’s meta, but only time will tell. Interestingly, much like the color itself, the two Legendary cards from steel in Archazia’s Island are strong, if not extraordinary.

First is Bagheera – Guardian Jaguar, which costs 5 Ink to play, can be ink-infused, has 4 Strength and 3 Willpower, and triggers a quest for 2. Additionally, it possesses the Bodyguard ability, protecting another card from being harmed. On top of that, it also has the ‘You Must Be Brave’ ability, which deals 2 damage to all opposing characters if Bagheera is removed during your opponent’s turn. This is especially effective when used with the Bodyguard ability, and works particularly well with other steel cards that inflict damage on opponents, such as Tinker Bell – Giant Fairy.

Least, yet still significant, we have Mickey Mouse – Inspirational Warrior. This is a 2-point card without inking capability, boasting 1 Strength and 1 Willpower. It quests for one Lore point, which isn’t particularly impressive. However, it also features Stirring Spirit, an ability that allows the owner to play a character card for free whenever Mickey Mouse triumphs over a rival character in a challenge. While it may not be easy for Mickey to win due to its 1 Strength and Willpower, the potential of this ability might deter opponents from questing with their characters. This makes the card decent, but whether it will prove competitive remains uncertain.
