Are The Sims 4 Timed Events a Game-Changer or Just a Hassle?

In contrast to previous iterations of The Sims series, which typically received support for only four to five years before transitioning to a new game, The Sims 4 has been active since 2014 and continues to thrive today. Notably, The Sims 3 was launched in 2009 with support ending in 2013. However, due to its extended lifespan, Electronic Arts (EA) is now incorporating live service features into The Sims 4, the most recent addition being timed events.

In simpler terms, taking part in The Sims 4’s Reward Events is gratis and they provide diverse rewards that boost game experience. However, Simmers often find these events and their associated rewards scarce, potentially causing players to miss out on them permanently. Another concern is the frequent notifications and pop-ups encouraging participation, which can interfere with gameplay and persist even after the events have ended.

The Upside to Sims 4’s Reward Events

In The Sims 4, specific events have a time limit, requiring players to finish a series of tasks within one household. As tasks are accomplished, points are accumulated, which can be redeemed for prizes during the process. Since it’s a timed event, the questline must be finished by logging in on certain days spread across the event duration, usually spanning four weeks. The Blast from the Past Event, as a unique anniversary event, was initially planned to last six weeks, but was subsequently extended to eight weeks.

As of March 2025, there have been four timed Reward Events:

  • Happy at Home Login Event (May 30, 2024 – July 3, 2024)
  • Reaper’s Rewards Event (September 24, 2024 – November 19, 2024)
  • Cozy Celebrations Event (December 3, 2024 – January 10, 2025)
  • Blast from the Past Event (February 4, 2025 – April 1, 2025)

In The Sims 4, the Reward Events have introduced a variety of new additions such as Sim and lot traits, Build and Buy mode items, and Create-a-Sim items. Some of these are refreshed versions of existing ones, while others are completely novel. For instance, the Blast from the Past Event featured items reminiscent of The Sims 1 and The Sims 2, like handheld phones, inflatable furniture, and a massive birthday cake as the finale reward. Although the handheld phones were merely decorative and non-operational, the overall collection of items and traits introduced through The Sims 4’s Reward Events has been worth accumulating.

The Cons of The Sims 4’s Reward Events

Obtaining fresh and exclusive goods via a narrative might sound entertaining at first glance, but critics often find these narratives underwhelming and monotonous, with Blast from the Past’s storyline being an exception. However, it’s important to note that if Simmers fail to participate in Reward Events, they will forfeit the opportunity to acquire these items permanently, as these time-limited events don’t reoccur, and the items are designed as a single, non-renewable acquisition.

The eight-week duration of the Blast from the Past Event was unusual due to it being a unique celebration marking the 25th anniversary of the Sims franchise. Extending such events could help alleviate some issues within the Sims 4 community. Additionally, one challenge is the persistent appearance of the Reward Event popup even after the event has ended, disrupting gameplay. If this pop-up were eliminated, the event would become less intrusive for those who have completed it. Meanwhile, players who haven’t finished the event yet would have a more extended period to do so and collect limited items.
