As a die-hard ArmA fan with over two decades of virtual combat under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement for ArmA 4. The announcement has been a long time coming, and though it may seem like an eternity until its release in 2027, I’ve learned to be patient thanks to the comically lengthy development cycles of GTA 6 and Star Citizen.
To commemorate their 25 years in operation, the team behind Bohemia Interaction, who specialize in creating military simulations from the Czech Republic, were honored by an enchanting symphonic concert performed by the esteemed Czech National Symphony Orchestra.
The big surprise came towards the end, where the big screen behind the orchestra flashed the words most gamers had been waiting for years to see: ArmA 4, coming 2027.
Among the dedicated fanbase of ArmA, known for their devotion among first-person shooter games, the announcement has sparked mixed feelings that are both sweet and bitter.
For quite some time now, the ArmA 4 project has been in public view. Back in 2022, Bohemia introduced ARMA Reforger to trial run the technologies that will underpin ArmA 4, and also familiarize modders with the latest tools they’ll be working with.
In 2022, the game titled “Reforger” was initially released as an early access version, and it finally achieved version 1.0 status last year following the resolution of numerous initial problems.
As an avid fan, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of anticipation when the fully-realized ARMA Reforger was unveiled. Its polished gameplay had me convinced that the groundwork had been laid for ArmA 4, leading me to believe that the next installment in the series might be gracing our screens within the year or two.
A larger number of people who find humor in the game ‘ArmA’ have made amusing analogies between it, ‘GTA 6’, and ‘Star Citizen’. These three games are well-known for their exceptionally lengthy development periods that haven’t yet resulted in a fully satisfying conclusion.
Can ArmA 4 Beat Reforger and ArmA 3?
Initially, when Reforger was launched, it appeared as if it had failed right from the start. Despite having numerous appealing features, the way it was implemented fell short of expectations. However, after two years, it seems like a completely different game altogether.
Bohemia Interactive made sure to refine the gameplay experience and incorporate fresh elements, like helicopters which were absent during the early access phase.
The exceptional quality of Reforger today, much like the continued relevance of ArmA 3, is due to a remarkably gifted and innovative community of modders.
Reforger is a game that unfolds during the tail end of the Cold War era, where it places the U.S. and the Soviet Union in conflict over the fictional island of Everon, initially introduced in the 2001 game called ArmA: Cold War Assault.
Even though many fans adore this particular setting, modifiers have transformed ARMA Reforger into a versatile playground. With sufficient effort, it has the potential to become as expansive and engaging as ArmA 3 over time.
The updated Reforger workshop webpage showcases fresh additions such as firearms, vehicles, and extensive landscapes, including the KIOK Milsim rendition of Afghanistan’s Kunar province.
As a gamer, I appreciate the freedom to swap out my reliable AKM or timeless M81 Woodland gear with just a couple of swift clicks, giving me a fresh look for my in-game character.
We are talking tacticool M4 builds with foregrips, holographic sights, and lasers, infected by the multicam virus, and riding aboard modern vehicles with digital weapon control systems.
Purists like to stick to more traditionalist Cold War mods, but the possibilities feel endless.
Despite Reforged being a competitor, ArmA 4 isn’t the only challenge it will face. In fact, within a 24-hour period on Steam, ArmA 4 attracted approximately 3500 players, whereas the original ArmA 3 managed to draw in a staggering 11600 players.
It appears that the continuous development process of ArmA 4 (with ARMA Reforger to some degree as well) has led players to become more independent, as it might take quite a while before either game reaches the amount of content currently found in ArmA 3.
Just as Offworld Industries, who are known for their work on Squad 44, Post Scriptum, and Starship Troopers: Extermination, have found it challenging to get Project Reality veterans to switch to Squad, there are some players who remain steadfast in their old gaming habits.
