Should the benefits of unlimited crossplay still seem unclear, the brilliant minds at Bohemia Interactive are ready to back up their argument with some statistics.
The newest creation from the Czech company is called ARMA Reforger, a first-person shooter game set in a sandbox environment that boasts a high level of realism but may not be widely popular or easily approachable by many.
ARMA Reforger” is relatively small in its specific genre compared to earlier Bohemia projects. It currently offers just two maps (with another one planned), and features three playable factions. Essentially, it serves as a testing ground for future developments of “ARMA 4“, which is not expected to launch for at least another two years.
The boundaries are evident, yet so is the count – According to Bohemia Interactive, ARMA Reforger currently boasts 172,000 daily users. A significant factor contributing to the game’s commercial triumph is its strategic choice to aim for consoles, a realm rarely explored by tactical shooters beyond the familiar territory of Windows.
In Support Of Crossplay
As a passionate gamer, it’s refreshing to see the gradual evolution in the gaming world, where even some companies like Sony have been hesitant about enabling crossplay with other platforms. This change is largely due to a rethinking of exclusivity deals, particularly among leading game development studios, who are recognizing the importance of fostering a more connected and inclusive gaming community.
ARMA Reforger debuted for PC and Xbox Series X/S in 2022. Its early access version came with just one map and had some technical issues, but it managed to make it through the initial phase, achieving gold status by November 2023.
The game generated a significant modding community, albeit not as extensive as that of ARMA 3, and Bohemia Interactive felt it was financially viable to develop a PlayStation version based on the number of copies sold.
In December 2024, ARMA Reforger was launched for PlayStation 5. As per Bohemia’s announcement on their social media platforms, it managed to sell a total of 262,000 copies in its first month.
A Czech programmer is still searching for a method to add mod compatibility on the PlayStation 5, however, Sony and Bohemia Interactive are currently developing a potential solution for this issue.
Peering at the Steam chart for ARMA Reforger as a devoted fan, it’s undeniable that crossplay has been a game-changer. On April 2024, the daily peak concurrent players on PC hovered around the 5,000 mark and maintained this level throughout the remainder of the year.
After the launch of ARMA Reforger on PlayStation 5, the number of people playing the game on PC nearly doubled. In December, player numbers peaked at 9,600, and so far in January, we’ve surpassed the 12,500 concurrent players record, which is the highest number of simultaneous gamers the game has ever had.
It’s clear that some of the player base growth can be attributed to Bohemia consistently enhancing the game, yet it’s hard to argue against the fact that allowing full crossplay has significantly boosted the game’s allure. With more friends playing together, studios earning more revenue, it’s hard to find a downside!
