Armie Hammer’s Controversial Comeback Film Renamed Amidst Warner Bros. Clash

Summary

  • Armie Hammer faced serious accusations in 2021 but was cleared of wrongdoing due to insufficient evidence.
  • The film The Dark Knight led to issues when a newcomer chose a similar name, prompting a title change to Citizen Vigilante.
  • The Dark Knight is a significant part of Warner Bros. IP, impacting the decision to change the newcomer’s title.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve just learned that the friendly chat between the legendary The Dark Knight and its potential successor has put any upcoming rivalry to rest. It seems the creative minds behind the new contender have decided to step aside, choosing harmony over competition this time around.

Warner Bros. Discovery doesn’t mince words; just ask ex-almost Batman Armie Hammer. Known for his roles in major films and TV shows over a 15-year career, including being cast as Batman in the aborted Justice League: Mortal project, Hammer saw his prospects dwindle in 2021 when several women accused him of misconduct. These allegations led to Hammer losing his agent and having projects he was attached to dropped. As public opinion towards Hammer deteriorated further, especially after some victims shared their stories in a Discovery Plus docuseries, a court found there wasn’t enough evidence to support these accusations.

The court decision offered Hammer an opportunity for a second chance, although public opinion remained unfavorable towards him and several prominent projects were hesitant to work with him. Nevertheless, Hammer decided to re-enter the industry through a film titled “The Dark Knight“, which is an unusual crime thriller directed by Uwe Boll, who had previously retired from video game adaptations and was notorious for some of the most poorly received video game adaptations in the 2000s. The title sparked conversation due to its connection to one of Batman’s well-known nicknames and the title of a successful movie featuring that character, without any connection to the DC hero. This issue was expected, and now director Boll has disclosed that the name will be altered. In a recent exclusive with Variety, he stated “We had a cordial discussion with Warner Bros. and agreed to change our title to ‘Citizen Vigilante’ to prevent any confusion with their renowned character“.

Naming A New Movie The Dark Knight Probably Wouldn’t Have Worked Out Well

Michael Roesch, an EP, also contributed to the discussion, sharing another factor influencing their decision to change the title. He stated, “We received a significant amount of feedback from our audience, who urged us to alter the title due to its resemblance to Chris Nolan’s movie. This was yet another aspect that played a role in our title change.” The film by Nolan, titled “The Dark Knight,” is highly acclaimed, with Steven Spielberg stating it deserved the Best Picture award. Many fans even consider Christian Bale as the ultimate live-action Batman. Given the likeness between the titles, Boll’s film might have initially garnered attention but would soon be recognized and rejected due to its association with such an iconic character and portrayal, which could have been too powerful for the upcoming movie.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” stands as one of his most outstanding creations, yet it plays a vital role in the ownership of the franchise. Warner Bros., being the custodians of the DC Universe, is still developing and confronting the challenge of introducing a fresh Batman character while the Matt Reeves’ version featuring Robert Pattinson remains relevant and well-received. Introducing another film named “The Dark Knight” would have been met with resistance by the company. Luckily, they managed to resolve the issue peacefully.

The Dark Knight Trilogy is currently available to stream on Max.
