Arrow Star Furious At Cheap Shots Aimed At Green Arrow in Peacemaker Season 1

Key Takeaways

  • The Peacemaker TV series, starring John Cena, has a dark comedic tone and intense action scenes.
  • Arrow actor Stephen Amell felt his character was unfairly attacked in one episode of Peacemaker.
  • Amell defends Arrow’s legacy and his portrayal of Green Arrow, despite criticism from Peacemaker.

As a devoted fan of both the Arrowverse and Peacemaker, I have to admit that I find myself torn between these two engaging shows. On one hand, I adore the dark comedy and intense action scenes in Peacemaker, with John Cena’s portrayal of Christopher Smith being nothing short of spectacular. On the other hand, I have a deep appreciation for Stephen Amell’s portrayal of Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, in Arrow. It seems that this long-time Arrow actor doesn’t share my feelings quite as much, especially when it comes to Peacemaker taking jabs at his character.

The series “Peacemaker” carries a humorous yet somber mood, which may not resonate with every viewer. This includes one actor who felt their character in the Arrowverse was unfairly ridiculed by the main character, leading them to believe that their show didn’t receive proper recognition.

In January 2022, the TV series titled “Peacemaker,” featuring John Cena as Christopher Smith (also known as Peacemaker), made its debut. This series is a spin-off from the 2021 film “The Suicide Squad.” The storyline picks up after Smith recovers from nearly fatal wounds and is enlisted by a secret ops team for undercover missions. The show combines witty humor, high-octane action sequences, and character development, but one actor from the “Arrow” series found the depiction of their character on the CW less amusing.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my thoughts about a recent episode of “Peacemaker” where John Cena’s character, Smith, made some less-than-pleasant comments about Green Arrow, the character I play in the CW’s series “Arrow.” To put it mildly, I found the jab unwarranted. “ frankly, that was a step too far. I didn’t take kindly to it at all,” I shared during an interview with Chris Van Vliet.

Amell emphasized that the latest portrayal of DC is often referred to as the Arrowverse instead of the Snyder Cut. The actor, who played Green Arrow for eight years across eight seasons of Arrow, felt that their show didn’t receive the recognition and appreciation it deserved. He expressed his disappointment because they put in a lot of effort into the project. Therefore, he asked fans to avoid making baseless comments about Arrow. In stronger words, he said, “We’ve been disrespected for years, and this just seemed too much. I’m not really angry, but when I heard that, I was like, ‘F**k those people,’ honestly.” He further added, “I’m up here working just as hard as everyone else. Do you know how tough it is to play a superhero without superpowers for 23 episodes a year? It’s incredibly challenging, and I’m not asking for a reward, but maybe don’t belittle our show.” This wasn’t the first time he responded to the criticism against Green Arrow. When James Gunn’s TV show started streaming in 2022, a journalist flagged the joke about Amell’s character to him on X, previously known as Twitter. In response, Amell, who was playing a wrestler on Starz’s Heels drama series at the time, stated on X, “I haven’t seen it. I’m too busy showing Cena what real wrestling looks like on TV.” This post has since been deleted, according to Entertainment Weekly.

It’s not hard to see why Amell feels protective over his character, given that he’s been associated with Arrow for almost a decade. His portrayal of the Green Arrow has shaped the character and even paved the way for the broader Arrowverse, which led to shows like Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman on the CW network. Though the DC TV shows on the CW were successful, they never made it into the DC Extended Universe. Despite some people’s perceived dislike for Arrow, Amell believes that the series was actually quite good; its storyline just started to falter after a few seasons. However, overall, it was excellent and managed to garner a strong fanbase during its nearly decade-long run on TV. To his fans, Amell is an exceptionally talented and versatile actor, and they consider him the best Green Arrow in the Arrowverse.
